I used a Commonwealth Travel Money card here which cost me a 5% surcharge. For six nights this added up. This is the reason I have given it 4 out of 5, not 5 out of 5.

The rooms are pretty cute (and snug) but having said that I've been in smaller rooms. The neighbourhood is wonderful, it's very well lit and there are heaps of shops and laneways to explore. We felt very safe. McDonalds, Subway and KFC are near Ikebukuro station and a 7/11 is very close. Note that if you come back out of the street as if going to the station and make a right there is a bar with real penguins in it! It has 'The Bar in Which Penguins are Present' written on the side.

Getting from Ikebukuro Station is challenging the first time, google map it first and make sure you go out the west exit or Exit C6, preferably C6.

Room Tip: Not near reception

I stayed in this hotel a month ago with my husband. This was our 1st trip to Japan. My husband booked this hotel via booking.com using a credit card. We choose it because it's not too expensive. We almost got lost when finding this hotel because we took the wrong exit at Ikebukuro station. We checked in (the reception only asked us to show our passports) & pay for the rent for 2 nights. Everything were soooo clean & being prepared. The room has flatscreen tv, water heater with 4 sachet of ocha (Japanese green tea), a comfy bed, & a bathroom with small bathtub, shower & wastafel, completed with all bathroom kits. Although they didn't serve any breakfast, we still could easily find something to eat near the hotel. McD, KFC, BK, japanese ramen, turkish kebab. There were also many vending machine that provides drinks near it. This hotel also has wifi but unfortunately the speed is poor. We checked out early in the morning because we have to do the Idul Fitri prayer at Meguro. We didn't find anyone at the reception but there's paper that had something written on it, "when you check out, put the key in here." So, we put the key there. And we didn't even say goodbye to the owner. If I had a chance to go back to Ikebukuro, Tokyo, I would be very happy to stay there again.

The room was small especially the bathroom but it was clean and had everything we needed. We had a lovely view of another building which we could touch through the window so it was a little claustrophobic but that is Tokyo. It took us ages to find this place but once you know your way around it is really close to the station and there are loads of shops and restaurants in the area. This hotel is great for the price and perfect if you just need somewhere to sleep.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 4th floor which seemed quieter than the lower floors.

They did not accept credit cards and made an "exception" for us. Our room was next to the reception desk and it was loud every time somebody came in. The bathroom was dirty and human hair was stuck so I had so ask especially for them to clean it. Even after cleaning the water did not run down smoothly. The room was nothing like in the pictures and at the time it still called itself "Ryokan" even though it had nothing to do with a Ryokan (Japanese style hotel). The staff was sometimes talking loudly in Korean and it was hard to get a good nights rest with new guests arriving all the time.
I would rather stay at a hostel, becausethe service they gave and the dirtyness was much worse here than in any hostel I visited up until now, and it's much more expensive.

It is what you would expect for a budget hotel. Very basic small room with its own bathroom. However the place is very clean and the staff very friendly. We got lost on the way to the hotel and didn't arrive until after midnight but they still got up and checked us in.

It is in a geriatric location, close to the JR train station and lots of restaurants close by.
