Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo
Ranked #8 of 87 Hotels / Ryokan in Shinjuku
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 March 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Keio Plaza in September 2011 for the final leg of our 2 week holiday in Japan.

The room, though small (which is normal for Japanese standards), was tastefully decorated and the bed was very comfortable too. It came with a Nespresso coffee machine which was a treat - we have one at home and had been missing it til we came to the Keio Plaza. Our room faced the west side and had a very nice view of the Tokyo Govt buildings as well as the sun set over Tokyo city. It was the perfect place to unwind and relax after a long day of sightseeing.

The location was also prime. We had stayed at the Hilton Tokyo during the first leg of our trip, which we found to be a bit of a hike from Shinjuku JR station and the main department stores/shopping/eating district on the other side. The Keio Plaza was much closer and had a very well stocked Lawsons and internal convenience store downstairs (this is a must for a late night meal/dessert!).

Staff here were also very helpful - they had arranged the airport bus for us and it was seemless when we checked out. I have stayed in quite a few business hotels for work, and have found the Keio Plaza one of the better ones. I was able to find a very good deal on Expedia, which meant that we only paid approx AUD200pn.

The only thing I could fault was that there was a slight smoking smell throughout our floor and in the room. I don't know whether this was due to poor air conditioning/ventilation (as they were turned down to save on electricity post-tsunami). It was raised in my feedback card to the Keio Plaza which they promptly acknowledged.

Shinjuku is the prime location to stay when in Tokyo, and I would definitely stay again at the Keio Plaza if I can get a similar good value deal.

Room Tip: Rooms on west side have a nice via of the Tokyo Government towers and a lovely view of the sun setti...

I remember visiting this hotel in 2007 and we had the Plaza premier rooms. At the time they felt modern and up to date. 5 years later and nothing has changed. The room is massive but the TVs small. Wifi is everywhere in modern hotels, but in the keio plaza premier rooms you have a LAN connection that is by no means fast.
10 channels on the TV and a movie rental service with dated b-movies on offer.

The hotel is trading off past glories. I decided to check out the breakfast buffer one morning. For £27 you get nothing better than a 3star hotel.

The service of the hotel is very good as is the location but it's out of date and I won't be returning in a hurry.

This hotel is not only beautiful, but it is in a prime location for sight seeing. The Imperal Palace, Shinjuku Gyoen (National Garden) and National Theatre complex are nearby. From this hotel, I booked and took a guided bus tour of the Nikko National Park. The Shinjuku subway & train station was walking distance and from there I had access to all of Tokyo and beyond (Kamakura).

The rooms were modern with elements of wabi sabi. And each morning, I started my day with a wonderful breakfast. These meals were served buffet style with many Japanese and American dishes to choose from.

This is a fabulous hotel with many perks for the price. And most of all it has a great location and access to the city.

I was originally going to book the Sunroute Plaza hotel, however I'm glad that i didn't and booked the Keio Plaza instead. I booked through Hotels.com whom at the time were having a great deal on newly renovated 36sqm premier rooms which were all on higher floors. There were four of us in our group 2 couples and 2 singles - our king room was on the 36th floor whereas our single friends were on the 26 floor if I recall.

Both rooms were very spacious and had a great view of the Shinjuku skyline - from both our rooms we could see the Shinjuku station and the surrounding stores.

If you're travelling from the station; there are two options to get to the hotel; take the north west exit and head to the pedestrian walk way - in the morning the travelators travel towards the hotel/busines district - so its good for tired feet. The pedestrian walkway will take you straight to the hotel.

the second option is to above ground and head towards the western shopping area (opposite the Keio Plaza shopping mall) - look for the hotel (which is visible above ground) and follow the path - this option is good if you want to grab some food and shop for a bit - sadly we didn't find this way until our last night in Tokyo; we'd been taking the pedestrian path then backtracking to get to electronic stores and food for the past four nights!

location wise the hotel is pretty close to everything - its a 3/5 min walk to the station and close to the eastern shady side side of Shinjuku. its also close to the Park hyatt should you want to do the "lost and translation" experience at that hotels' bar (highly recommended and go before 8 to avoid cover charge). However we didn't try the Keio Plaza's bar and breakfast as we felt it was much too expensive for what you were getting. Breakfast food was readily available at the station anyway.

as for the rooms - yes they are spacious, newly renovated and very comfortable and plenty of closet space. However the bathroom needs an update though - it just didn't feel in keeping with the modern room.

Tokyo was our last stop before travelling to Niseko for snowboarding - we arranged the Airport limousine bus to Haneda - it was too easy!

Room Tip: book the premier rooms and don't forget to ask for the wireless router

Stayed here in mid of Feb 2012.

Location: Don't expect the hotel just next to Shinjuku Station but very fairly (5-8 minutes) and enjoyable walking distance as lots of restaurants, convenient stores, shopping arcades and cafe along the way.

Room: Plaza premium room just fabulous and Superb comfort. In room facilities more than adequate, free cable Internet (use Apple Airport Express to turn it into WIFI, speed in great even), being on high floor, the view is blocked by higher Tokyo Metropolitan Gorvernment Twin Towers Building, otherwise, it is breathtaking.

Facilities: swimming pool closed during winter. Gym room is just sub-standard compare to other 5 star hotel. Lots of restaurants and bars but never try it out as outside one seem more attractive.

The concierge service is always very professional. Luggages always take very good care by them from and to airport. Hotel itself is the destination of seat-in-coach service from Narita and Haneda airport.
