The restaurant ‘Tentei’ is located 2 minutes walk from the Ginza downstairs and is fairly easy to find.

If you’re luck to get a reservation (they’re not open on Sunday) you are in for wonderful food.

Its small, probably no more than 20 seats in total with two chefs showing their years of experience. Its simply a world class tempura restaurant that’s been around for some years and I never get fed-up with their menu.

We had one of the set meals which basically included just about everything……some beer and warm saki. It really doesn’t get much better.

Can I recommend Tentei……….only if you want a world class tempura experience!

We ran into this place while shopping in Ginza. I was planning on going to a higher-rated tempura place in Shinjuku later that evening, but was hungry. Based on my experience here, I'll rate the other place lower because this was just so special.

There are just two guys behind the counter frying one little morsel at a time. Each bite is a little gift. The batter is crisp. The ingredients are fresh. And the chefs and the servers were attentive and helpful to a non-speaking gaijin.

I will seek this place out every time I visit.

We ate lunch here. If you are used to greasy, soggy tempura, this place will be a revelation. There are several top-class tempura restaurants in Tokyo, where dinner can run you well north of JPY 10,000 ($100). Here you can get an excellent lunch assortment for about JPY 3000-3500 ($30-35) plus any drinks. Most of the restaurant is counter seating; there are a couple of tables in the back. You want to sit at the counter and watch the chefs prepare the tempura piece by piece. They start with the best possible ingredients and cook them perfectly. The coating is light and crispy without any hint of greasiness. Service is very friendly and accommodating. A find.

I often visit here whenever I want to eat Tempura. I usually order Tempura couse for lunch. This includes all kinds of tempura: shrimp, seasonal veggi, and fresh fish.
