“Best service/hospitality ever”
Reviewed 7 April 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Imperial from 4/1-4/6 while we were visiting to consider a potential relocation to Tokyo. We had originally considered the Ritz in Roppongi, but changed to the Imperial due to proximity to my office. I'm very glad we made the switch. The hotel staff were the friendliest and most hospitable of any hotel I've used before. They consistently went out of their way to make us feel like home. I especially appreciated them allowing us to use the Imperial Club hospitality lounge upon our arrival. Our flight got in at 5 am, and since our room was not ready yet, they made the lounge available to us to shower and get cleaned up following the long flight. My only complaint was that the beds were a bit firmer than I would have liked, but we got used to them. Would definitely stay at the Imperial again.

Beautiful, impressive lobby. Well appointed, clean rooms.
Excellent service, including attendants on each floor.
The Imperial was very busy with what appeared to be wedding parties and gatherings of professionals but everything was running like clockwork. We didn't wait for check-in or check-out. It didn't feel crowded due to the size and layout of the common areas.
An excellent hotel.

It was a trip back to memory lane. looked like homecoming at its best. The imposing lobby, the flower arrangement, the stairs. the lift and alll familiar smile from the door to the executive floor. Truly Imperial. One is spoilt for choice for food.

Big rooms--though this may be because the bed was king-sized--and the staff is so polite (got a little intimidating, but their hearts were in the right place!)

Don't order Western food, even out of curiosity. Western food is all fine and dandy, but in Japan it's subpar compared to any Japanese dish~

Have stayed twice in the past couple of months at the Imperial - and beginning to like it a lot. I have been staying here off and on for twenty years, but defected to the Peninsula when splashing out and to other hotels in Roppongi when on a budget business trip. But the new rooms in the old building are well worth exploring. And recently the junior suites were being discounted by 50%, so it is a good time to try.

Here is the good news. The refurbished rooms in the old building are very nice. And this is where you need to stay. (I have not stayed in the Tower for a while, but unless they have systematically gone through and knocked every two rooms into one, it will remain a claustrophobic place to stay.)

My JS in the old building had two windows looking onto Hibiya park; two huge queen beds; a hall with dressing room off it (love dressing rooms) and a smallish but modern and well appointed bathroom. The hall had a motion sensor light - what a sensible idea in a hotel room!

The room has a distintive Japanese feel. Fresh flowers - thank you! The bathroom has a rain shower, but the water falls on the floor with a stool to sit on as one would at a Japanese bath house. I like this. Comfortable sitting area and desk. So very appropriate for high level business travel. Downstairs the front desk service is impeccable. Service at the Imperial is truly democratic. The staff seem to treat everyone in the same helpful and kind way.

The not so good news. The lobby is still the same old lobby - a famous Tokyp meeting place, but unchanged in the last thirty years as far as I can tell. So still that seventies design. Could really do with a make over. And the shops are the same - really they need to be cleared out and replaced with something less drab. There is a lot of traffic through the arcade, but I never see anyone actually shopping. The in-house restaurants are very good in their way - but expensive. I particularly like Le Brasserie which does authentic French bistrot cooking very well. But you should get out as Ginza and Marunouchi are on your doorstep.

Le Brasserie is over-lit. In fact the lighting in the entire hotel needs to be rethought. Less harsh. The hotel has big open spaces and they don't need to be so bright!

Then there is the wifi. You will need to ask for a wifi router to be sent to your room. Do so on check-in. Or get one at the business centre later. The wifi works well and is free. Why they don't simply wire up all the rooms beats me.

But I like the Imperial more and more.

On a technical note, rooms in the old building ending xx81 are against the elevators and the night is filled with rushing sounds.

Room Tip: Not xx81. There are great corner suites at the West end of the old building overlooking Hibiya Park.
