“Good value offering a variety of options”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2012

Located in central Tokyo with very easy access to a central subway station with multiple lines the New Otani is set apart from its 4-star hotel peers by the wide variety of options available to a traveler whether it be rooming, dining or leisure. Upscale business travelers should consider the Zen floors (9th & 10th) in the main building which offer a lounge with true bespoke service and very modern, luxurious rooms. Vacationers can choose from a wide variety of rooms and suites in multiple price ranges by studying the web site carefully. With more than a dozen restaurants in the complex, the New Otani offers the most dining choices (and for all budgets from super expensive French to local tonkatsu) of any Tokyo hotel. Trader Vics is a fun place to visit with its upscale, romantic (darkly lit) Polynesian atmosphere though a bit pricey. The 400 year old Japanese garden is worth walking through (by far the best of any hotel) and can be viewed from one of the coffee lounges offering an impressive view through magnificent floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities include on-premise tennis courts (3 in fact!), garden walks, spa services (with an in-room option) and a large gym/pool.
The clear downside is that despite the recent renovations (2009~2010), the hotel still feels dated and for business travelers, it may feel a bit out of the "hustle and bustle" of the city. This isolation and time warp can be good or bad depending on one's view. As the hotel is certainly not in vogue, excellent value can be found by studying all the options available.

Room Tip: Rooms are either in the Tower or in the Main building. Tower rooms (built in the mid-70s) tend to...

We had to chose somewhere to stay before a morning flight from Narita and this proved to be a great choice. The hotel, itself has friendly, helpful staff and a wonderful rooftop bar with stunning views. It is also very close to the restaurants and bars of Asakusa. Only quibble - no wifi!

I have stayed at this hotel several times , it is handy for the subway system and walking distance to my office when in Tokyo.
The rooms are dated but clean and well equipped. It has has possibly the worst Tv channel avialabilty for international travellers ever, They even seem to dub most of the English channels in Japanese, so if the weather is off or if you work in room , be prepared.............

I've occasionally chosen to stay here for the past 15+ years, and it's never let me down. The New Otani is conveniently situated in Tokyo's Akasaka district, and is a 5 minute walk from Akasaka Mitsuke Station and 10 minutes from the JR Yotsuya Station. In the past, the hotel would've been considered 5-star, but time and competition have relegated it to 4-star status at best. Not for the service, which is as terrific as ever, but the rooms, at least the ones in the (Garden Court) Tower. Rooms in the Tower are older, smaller and showing their age - for one, internet is still via LAN (no WiFi), not to mention that power ports are very minimal in the rooms. Even worse, the port is behind the desk and is very hard to reach (I had to physically move the table and crawl under to plug my laptop into the wall.)

While the rooms in the Main building are nicer, they are priced much higher. Therefore, you have a choice of staying at a so-so room at a competitive price, or a nicer room but at a price that's at least 50% more. For the price of a room in the Main building, travelers will have other choices in the area, most notably the ANA InterContinental.

For me, the Tower rooms do the job since they're a great value, and I just make sure to bring a power strip so that I can plug all of my gadgets during my stay. Works like a charm.

I booked a room at the Garden Tower, and following the advice of other TA reviewers I joined the New Otani Club. Upon check-in I was offered a room at the Main, but it was a smoking room and preferred to keep the original booking. The room was nice enough; the furniture and general decor was too old and in need of refurbishment, but it fulfilled my needs, and I especially liked the view of the Shinjuku skyscrapers from one of the windows.

If you are into bouquet and cosy hotels, stay away, because the New Otani is so big that it feels a bit cold and impersonal. But it has a very convenient location, next to a subway station on the Shibuya line, so it's a quite good option when staying in Tokyo.
