“Excellent value for money Ryokan in Ueno”
Reviewed 29 June 2011

We stayed here for 5 nights in September 2008. We got a free dinner at their restaurant (each 5-night or more reservation got one). Only Japanese-style breakfast, but a decent one. There's a western-style coffee shop down the road if you need your morning caffeine dose.

The room was large enough, with a good quality futon and pillows. There was a Japanese-style bathtub and a separate toilet. The open-air baths in the top-floor terrace were also pretty good.

All in all, very good Tokyo ryokan and excellent value for money, within walking distance from the train and metro stations, and reasonably close to Akihabara.

Hotel Edoya is a great value ryokan in a good location, close to a lot of transport options. It is also close to a department store where you can buy meals and bento, lots and lots of restaurants and izakaya (Japanese watering holes that also do food), and also Ueno Park, which is home to some of Tokyo's top attractions.
The hotel itself is nice - we stayed in a Japanese style room and there was plenty of room for two adults and a child, as well as a living/eating area. Our room (standard twin) had a western style toilet and a Japanese style bathroom, though the bathroom didn't get much use: the Hotel Edoya has a great public bath including a Rotemburo (outside 'hot spring'). For some reason the men's bath has more ammenities (a sauna and other things) but the women's bath is also very good.
Breakfast at the restaurant next door is included in the price, and it is buffet with mainly Japanese style breakfast options.
There is luggage storage (we asked nicely and the owners held our luggage while we are out of town for a few days), a tea room, and there is free wifi in the reception area.
All in all - highly recommended. We have already booked to stay when we get back to Tokyo!

Although this is not sort of luxury hotel, it is worth to stay with a reasonable price in central Tokyo. Very close to Ueno and Akihabara and easy to get a main train, Yamanote-line and several undergrounds. Safe and lots of bars and restaurants are open until midnight in Ueno and Akihabara. As others mentioned, facilities are not new but sufficient. No bedbugs for us. Especially Japanese outside bath and Coffee room are tastful. Stuff are kindly and friendly, but only one guy can speak English and others are hardly speak. Overall we are satisfied with staying at this hotel;)

We stayed here for 2 nights over Christmas. Great location, close to Ueno Park and the museums and short walk to several subway stops and train stations.

After reading reviews about accommodation in Japan we were expecting small, cramped rooms, but this was not the case. The economy private Japanese-style double room had a very comfy futon and a sitting area with a couch and table. Hot water in a thermos was provided each day so we could have green tea. The room was very toasty and warm which was nice when it was 5 degrees outside. The toilet room was small but toilet slippers were provided.

The hill that so many have commented on is no big deal, not steep by any stretch of the imagination, more like a slight rise. The decor was a little dated, but added to the charm of the place.

Breakfast was a bonus, included in the price. Mainly Japanese-style (rice, umeboshi plums, fish, miso soup etc) with some Western items available (though with a slight Japanese take - salad as a breakfast food? - all part of the experience, but also toast, yoghurt, boiled eggs, coffee!). Make sure you get there before 9.30am, as they shut the food off promptly.

One highlight of our stay was the rotemburo - or outdoor bath. There are men's and women's areas. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash all provided. Nice and relaxing just before bed.

The staff were all very nice and even called some places in Kyoto for us when we were looking for accommodation there.

Overall great value and we would definitely stay here again.

This hotel was well located, had good public baths, washing machine for use and good breakfast. The family room for 5 was fabulous. I think is it is a good choice for anyone looking for a japanese style well priced place to stay in Tokyo.
