Description: The Balbirnie Bistro, a charming and intimate great value restaurant, set within the original kitchens of Grade A Listed Balbirnie House. Our specialities are mussels, great burgers, salads, traditional and classic bistro favourites, steak frites, and sundaes.
Reviewed 11 December 2017 via mobile

We had travelled home by train from Paris all the way to Markinch but final train was delayed so our taxi had to drop us off at Balbirnie rather than take us home as the Bistro closed at 9 pm and it was already 5 to 9.
We needn’t have worried as not only did they look after our three suitcases but welcomed us into the Bistro as if it had newly opened just for us.
We enjoyed a glass of Prosecco followed by a classic burger and hake dish finished off with two puddings and coffee. All washed down with a nice red wine.
The service was friendly , efficient and we were never aware that we were the only people dining.
Balbirnie often gets bad reviews in the main restaurant but we have been many times at the Bistro and it never disappoints .
Their wedding venue is also second to none from personal experience with our daughter’s.
Keep up the good work.

We thank you for taking the time to post comments on TripAdvisor.

Over many years we have responded with personal consideration to each and every set of guest comments, however reflecting where the world of Hospitality is today, we now feel there is more relevance in providing a general response to each review. As and when blockchain technology allows hotels to verify that all published reviews are fully legitimate, we may be able to justify allocating our own resources again, to responding to individual reviews.

Dear Readers, our gratitude to everyone who has made a positive online contribution. We mention in passing that we are recipients of TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence for all 3 of our review pages, Balbirnie House the hotel, The Orangery (with #BalbirnieDeluxe) and our Balbirnie Bistro. It is lovely to know that the hard work of the 110 individuals who form our brigade, receives recognition which is so consistently great from our customers.

For all daily updates and photographs, competitions and offers, please do head on over and join our Balbirnie House Hotel Facebook page, we have more than 15,000 individuals who now receive Balbirnie’s Daily Updates. This is now very much an accumulating historical archive of information, a celebration of life in and around Balbirnie. Our gratitude as always.

Twitter is now also very much an integral part of what we do, We operate numerous Twitter feeds, the main listing is @BalbirnieHouse - talking daily about what goes into the complexity of our operations, as well as the generalities of how wonderful it is to work within the hotel sector. Please do join us.

Additionally, Balbirnie’s social media also focusses on the ongoing labour of love, a never-ending program of re-investment back into the fabric of the assets, maintaining and improving the future of our Grade A Listed 1777 National Treasure. Over recent years we’ve seen investment annually prioritised and maintained in a range between double and verging quadruple that of industry norms for the hotel sector, which explains why Balbirnie is currently looking at her best in history. Long may that continue, our ability to maintain such expenditure really is the living of a hotelier's dream.

We had a 2 course lunch in the Bistro, only because were not able for a third course, as they were good size portions. There was a good selection on the menu, and the standard of food was excellent, obviously a very highly qualified chef. We then proceeded to the lounge, for a coffee and a drink. Very comfortable sitting area with the coal fire burning, as it was cold outside.
