We had a wonderful 11 nights stay at the Afri-Khaya and during that time it became our home from home.
To begin with we had a bit of difficulty finding the place as my map of the Eversdal/Sonstraal area wasnt particularly good and we ended up going round in circles. We also found out that some sat-navs dont locate it properly either, so I recommend taking a decent street map.
On arrival we were given a very friendly welcome by the owners, Cobus and Hettie; Cobus even brought over their sat-nav for us to use while we were there. The apartment had four separate good size rooms – lounge, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom and was light and airy and beautifully furnished. We had our own driveway to park the hire car by the side of the apartment.
The bedroom had a large comfortable bed and a cot and there were ample cupboards and drawers to put our clothes away, plus a safe in one of the cupboards for any valuables. The bathroom had a separate shower and bath and plenty of towels provided, plus toilet rolls and some basic toiletries. The kitchen had a full size oven and hob, microwave, fridge freezer plus all the pots, pans, crockery and cutlery one should need for self catering. There were also tea bags, instant coffee and some little milk cartons provided as a welcoming touch.
We found the Glengarry shopping mall less than 10 minutes drive away. It was a small shopping centre but had all the shops you needed for supplies as well as several restaurants, a Dominos pizza takeaway and a coffee shop, Oppiekoffie. There were also a few clothes shops, a tobacconist, a liquor store, a Crazy Price store and a lovely bakery. Oppiekpffie did a good breakfast for a very reasonable price so we tended to go there most mornings rather than cook in the apartment.
The reason for our visit was to see my parents who lived about a mile away, so we spent most of our days out with them, returning to the apartment about 4pm. Then we would sit out in the garden Afri-Khaya shared with the main house. It was a lovely, large, peaceful garden with a well tended lawn, shrubs and trees as well as a trickling fishpond and a good size swimming pool. One hot afternoon I waded in the pool up to my thighs, but the water was too cold for me to take the plunge. Maybe in the height of summer it might have been different but it was getting towards the end of summer when we were there. There were plenty of chairs or benches to sit out on, including a gazebo over a large table and chairs for when the sun got too hot. We had my parents round for lunch under the gazebo one of the days.
Most evenings we stayed at the apartment and cooked our evening meal there. There was a television with DSTV which had Sky News and BBC World News and all the British sport you could think of. There were also all the South African channels although we didnt bother much with those. We ate out a couple of times, once at the Spur restaurant at Glengarry and once at the Cattle Baron in Durbanville, both were very good and not far away.
I had a bit of trouble connecting my laptop to the WIFI to start with, although had no problem with either phone. The problem turned out to be that the security key was WEP and my laptop was running Windows 7 which wont automatically connect to WEP, you have to set it manually. After that, apart from one evening when the internet appeared to be down, I had no further trouble.
We visited the V&A Waterfront one day which was about 30-40 minutes drive way depending on the traffic on the N1, and Boulders on another day which took about an hour and a half due to roadworks at Muizenburg, but normally shouldnt take more than an hour.
The neighbourhood around the apartment was made up of large, well looked after houses and felt safe although the apartment had burglar bars at the windows and security gates at both front and back doors which made us feel secure especially at night. Hettie and Cobus were also always available in the main house if we had any problems or requests.
We were sad to leave the Afri-Khaya and will always have fond memories of our stay there. For a couple, I can thoroughly recommend it as a place to stay for any length of time. Many thanks for your hospitality, Cobus and Hettie, and for letting us stay in your lovely apartment. We hope all goes well with your hospital treatment Hettie and thank you again.
