We spent four nights at the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville back in August 2014. We had originally booked the other Gran Principe, but were upgraded upon arrival (which, for the price we paid, I was shocked, but more than happy to take). We've stayed at a number of all-inclusive resorts in the DR and Mexico and this was our first visit to a Principe property. We flew in to Santo Domingo and had a private transfer to the resort, which was quite a drive, but it was substantially much less to fly there than into La Romana. The resort is definitely secluded, but within a development of timeshares and other amenities. We were there to just relax and didn't do any excursions. Our room was basic, but nice. There were a lot of issues with the power going on and off throughout the stay, and I'd wake up to the TV on or come back from dinner and the TV would be on. It didn't bother us much, but something we noticed. We also had some issues with the hot water, but it wasn't a huge deal. I didn't realize how much I appreciated the upgrade until I actually got it. Things were much quieter and at a slower pace in the Bouganville area. We never had a problem getting seats at the pool or on the beach, and the waiter service was pretty constant. The pools were great, and the beach, while cloudy and not the best Caribbean beach I've seen, was sufficient and the chairs and "umbrellas" were plentiful. We didn't really participate in much of the nightly shows, but the one or two that we watched were pretty good. We liked the live music that appeared throughout the resort each night. Our biggest dislike probably revolved around the food. In most of our trips, we tend to avoid the buffet. On this trip, the buffet definitely had some of the most consistent food choices. We did have a few dinners as the sit-down restaurants, but the food was fairly bland and not enjoyable. The atmosphere wasn't that great either. I did, however, enjoy a lot of the different foods on the buffet. The food wasn't the best, but for the price we paid, I was pretty content. Another interesting aspect that we noticed as the lack of English utilized at the property. There were a variety of different languages, but very little English, and while we dabble in Spanish so we got around, it wasn't as easy to mix in a little English when asking for something as it has been at other resorts in the DR and Mexico. We got by fine, but it was definitely different from other experiences. All in all, we had a great, relaxing trip and would recommend the resort for others looking for a bargain experience at a higher-quality all-inclusive.

This was my third time to a Bahia Principe resort. It was absolutely beautiful. Have never been to a resort as clean as this one. Hard to find anything wrong as far as cleanliness. The food was excellent as well as the staff. Although the Luxury resort did not have any live entertainment, the Head of Animation, Jose, was second to none. What an amazing resource he is to this resort. Some things at the resort could definitely be improved upon. 1. Very difficult, at times, to find Premium Liquor (either ran out or couldn't get any). We feel being at a Luxury Adults Resort and the price we paid should have allowed us to get the Premium Liquor at any time. 2. Our mini-fridge in the room was suppose to be stocked everyday. Despite mentioning this to the staff, we only had our fridge fully restocked three days out of the 14 we were there. 3. Although a Luxury resort, it was disappointing to have to go over to the family resort next door to see any entertainment. In comparison to my stays at other Bahia Principe Resorts, the entertainment was certainly not up to par. 4. The Luxury resort pretty well closes down between 10 and 10:30pm. If you are looking for something to do, you had to go to the family resort next door. With a few changes here and there, this resort could be the Number One resort of all times.

Room Tip: Ask for building 51 or 52. They are closets to the pool and ocean.

My wife and I recently returned from a very enjoyable week at the Grand Bahia Principe Bouganville April 27-May 2/15
This gorgeous resort is an ideal size with none of the rooms being more than a couple of minutes away from the pool & beach. The staff is constantly cleaning, polishing, painting and gardening. There were no health related issues that I am aware of. Our room on the second floor (no elevator) was lovely with firm yet comfortable beds. Note that the tile floors can be very slippery when wet and there are no safety bars in the shower stall.

The food was quite good for the most part with the dining room offering a different theme each night. One evening they offered lobster tails, turkey another and delicious roast beef on another night and the free flowing Spanish wine was quite drinkable. The food was generally kept to the proper temperatures but like any buffet, your food tends to get cold by the time you make the rounds of the different selections. One negative was that they seemed to wait until an item was all gone before they replenished it.

The pool is a nice size and we seldom had difficulty finding lounge chairs. The beach is very pretty with lots of palm trees and an abundance of comfortable loungers under a palapa. We noticed staff cleaning the beach of overnight sea weed, shells etc. everyday. While the water was not crystal clear, it was lovely to swim in. The resort posted water quality testing results near the life-guard stations.

All of the staff from the always visible manager Omaira Garcia on down were very friendly and helpful although many of the waiters and housekeeping staff spoke very little English and it was particularly difficult trying to communicate with housekeeping that we wanted face (wash) cloths everyday not just once in a while and to make-up the room earlier in the day. There seemed to be an inconsistency of training of the dining room wait-staff as some were much more attentive than others and it became a little joke to see what item or utensil was missing from the table.

This is not a resort for “party animals”. The limited entertainment ended at 9:30 most evenings and you had to take a short walk to the family resort for more. The all-inclusive beverage selection was second to none with top shelf liquors like Canadian Club & Crown Royal, Johnny Walker Red & Black, Smirnoff & Sky vodka etc. The only beer available was the local Presidente which is a very nice pilsner style.

I appreciated the free 24hr WiFi available in the lobby but for a resort of this quality it should be available in the rooms as well. Be prepared for many power outages most of which were of short duration.

We played the par 3 golf course one day for something to do. The cost was $27usd which included balls, tees, basic clubs and a beat up golf cart although I was told that they were getting some new(er) carts. We also booked a speed boat & catamaran trip through the Transat rep. I do not recommend this excursion for anyone with mobility issues such as bad knees, hips etc. as you are required to climb in & out of the speed boat over the stern by the outboards and a dangerous (in my opinion) transfer to the catamaran. I suggested to the Transat rep. that they disclose this.

Overall this was a very relaxing week at a lovely hotel at a bargain price.

Room Tip: 3 story buildings with no elevators. Tile floors can be very slippery!!!

This was our 2nd time in a Bahia Principe resort. First time 2 years ago we spent 1 week at the Esmeralda in Punta Cana. This time we spent 2 weeks April 12 to 26 2015 at the Bahia Principe Bouganville Don Pablo Collection. We went to surprised my sister and her husband at this resort and did not regret it…..so much fun. The trip from Punta Cana airport was 1 hour and 15 mins. Nice new highway and the bus was comfortable. Check in at the hotel was fast and efficient, we were greeted with a wet towel to refresh ourselves and served a glass of champagne. Our room was not ready since we arrived at lunch time which was a lot earlier than we expected. Manuela, the Director of the hotel, proposed to send our luggage to our room once ready and that in the meantime we should go eat lunch at the buffet. Which is where we surprised my sister and her husband…hi, hi, hi.... We were given room 54120 facing the Lobby close to the Jasmine buffet Restaurant. It was a very clean, comfortable and quiet room. We honestly could not hear the lobby live music in the evening from our room with our patio door closed. The staff exceeded our expectations, very helpful and friendly. The hair dryer in our room malfunctioned and when we notified the staff it was replaced within 15 mins. If you have any problems or are missing coffee, alcohol bottle or even face cloth in your room don't be shy and just ask and you shall receive (never have we visited a resort where any problems were addressed so promptly). Many of the staff have knowledge of either English or French on top of Spanish. During our stay we celebrated my husband's 59th birthday and the staff made sure that it was a great celebration with balloons, champagne, cake and so much more (he doesn't think I'll be able to top it next year…lol). The animation team was fantastic in organizing activities to keep you entertained from morning to evening. The buffet was very nice and had plenty of choice for every palate. We downloaded the app for the Resort and made some a la carte restaurant reservations with it. Our favourites of the a la carte restaurants were probably the Gourmet restaurant and Oriental Takara restaurant. I went to the Gym every day.....it has plenty of equipment for various exercises, 2 treadmills, an elliptical machine, a standing bike and lots of fitness equipment with adjustable weights, and free weights. The gym has towels, water, bathrooms, and also has 3 ceiling fans and is air conditioned. Every other resort we have visited had a beachfront on the Atlantic and had much more waves than we encountered here. Although we do love the sound of those larger waves the sheltered inlet off the Caribbean here allowed for more relaxed kayaking, sailing and simply lounging in the water which we truly enjoyed (the water really is not as murky as you might think based on previous reviews).Wifi was free 24/7 in the lobby...we found it a bit slow and it was hit and miss some days. We would like to send a special thank you for all the great service we had during our stay to : Manuela (Directrice of the hotel) Carlos (Manager) José ( Assistant Animation) Luis and Manuel from the animation team, William, Nestor, Edouardo, Jazmine, Adolfina, from the pool , beach and Jacuzzi bar, and not to forget the restaurant staff including Alexander, Hector, Jhonny, JuanCarlos, Jazmin, Ariel, Clemente and José(Chippendale...lol). An extra special thank you to Omaira (Assistant Hotel Manager), her friendly attentiveness and devotion to ensuring our stay was special made an already great vacation exceptional. Will we return? No doubt;-)

Travelled to this resort Apr. 11-25 with my wife and another couple. As always with Bahia resorts it appears clean with plenty of friendly and attentive staff. How can anyone complain about two weeks in the fun and sun of the Caribbean? Lets take the first scratch below the surface:

Check in: Cold drink and face-cloth upon arrival (If I knew I wasn't going to get another face cloth the next 2 weeks I would have hung on to this). Quick and efficient but placed in a room with two beds despite an email from our travel agent at time of booking (6 months) and a personal email 2 weeks prior to arrival requesting a King bed. Had to wait and unpack the next day to accommodate this (scratch).

Room: Bright and clean. Maid service was great. Only one morning without hot water. Only seen a face-cloth on 1 of 14 days (scratch). Bar fridge filled to advertised quantities only once. If you like the mini bottles of liquor they are like vitamins at this resort( One-A-Day)

Buffet: Lots of friendly staff here however getting a refill on your drink was next to impossible (scratch). Bring a microwave as the food is always cold. Even dishes freshly arriving were cold at times (gouge more than a scratch).

Drinks: Nothing screams luxury like a drink from a slushy machine...mmmmmm syrup from a jug (gouge again).

Lounge: Service here was spotty at best so order two drinks each so you don't have to wait for them to come around again (scratch).

Pool: No scratches here it was the best spot to be with lots of syruppy service. Pool is large and clean with reasonable access most times to a lounger in the shade.

Entertainment: A little duo singing and hammering an electric piano. Not sure if this can be classified as entertainment. No variety shows like the Sian Kaan in Mexico had (scratch).

Beach: Knew about the beach before I came and it is exactly as advertised. Never set foot in the water (scratch).

Conclusion: I think my issues stem from the fact that I cannot afford the luxury I so richly deserve? :) This is a clean property and surviving a week should be possible. Would not recommend 2 weeks however only because of the cold food and less then desirable drinks.

Room Tip: No issues with rooms here so any room is good.
