“A good start to our Tobago trip”
Reviewed 14 January 2012

For a lot of British visitors, these apartments might seem a bit scruffy round the edges, but it was pretty much what we wanted for the first 3 days of our holiday. The big pluses about the apartment were: very spacious; separate bedroom and living room; hot and powerful shower; well-equipped kitchen; right by the beach; walking distance from the airport. The gardens in front of the apartment were pleasant (though there was some maintenance work going on when we stayed) with birds and a view across the sea. There was sometimes noise from the road at the rear though.

We loved the food at the Store Bay food court and sampled something different each day. We'd also recommend the soursop icecream from the ice cream shop by the food court.

I wouldn't have wanted this to be the only place we stayed in Tobago - we moved on to Castara - but a couple of days here at the start enabled us to explore Store Bay and Pigeon Point, and take a boat trip out to Buccoo Reef.

My boyfriend and I decided to run away to Tobago for a day and so decided to stay at Johnston. When we toured the grounds and facilities, we were really pleased. The staff was friendly and rather helpful, the grounds were spacious and the beach was amazing. The bartender and maintenance manager were exceptional. We decided to stay a day and ended up staying for two days. We will definitely be back and are sure to recommend here to anyone.

We stayed at Johnston’s apartments from June 9-11, 2011. We needed somewhere to accommodate 6 adults and 1 baby which was close to the airport and right on the beach. It was less than a 5 minute walk to the airport. A car from the airport to the hotel was $35tt. This hotel had everything we needed for a large party. We had rooms 40 and 41, on the 2nd floor. We paid $578tt per room per night. You must pay for your entire stay when you check in. They charge based on the amount of people in the room.

Each apartment in this hotel has an ocean view. Each has a separate bedroom with a queen sized bed and a twin bed. The living room area had 2 twin beds. There was a breakfast bar for eating. The balcony had 2 chairs and a table as well as a lounger. The kitchen had most utensils one might need for cooking, including pots, pans, a kettle, cutlery, plates, mugs, glasses, ice trays, dish soap and sponges. They did not provide a coffee maker. Although we did not cook there, we sanitized and used the plates and cups, which came in handy. You have to request beach towels from the front desk. The linens they provided appeared clean, but some were stained and seemed overused, so you may want to bring your own. Generally the rooms were clean. The bathroom was pretty clean, but we had problems flushing the toilet. Bath towels are only changed every other day. They provide 3L bottled water for $12tt. The front desk closes at 5pm which was a slight inconvenience and the gate to the hotel closes at 11pm, after which you must enter through the Crown Point hotel entrance. Visit the Crown Point Hotel website and the Johnston apartments website for pictures. You have use of all the facilities at the Crown Point Hotel. The grounds are fairly nice, with an ample amount of picnic tables for gatherings.

The beach (Storbay) is literally steps from the hotel entrance. I consider Storbay to be one of the best beaches in Tobago. The hotel is close to several cheap restaurants, including pizza boys, royal castle, rituals (coffee house), church’s chicken. The Crown Point hotel has a restaurant, but is fairly pricey. Breakfast was around $85tt per person and lunch and dinner ranged from $100tt to $250tt. There are also several huts on the beach serving local dishes for $30-$45 per serving. If you are looking for crab and dumplings, we found that you should go early as they do sell out fairly quickly. Miss Esmie’s was the best in our opinion. It’s a 3 minute walk to a mini mart and walking distance to Cruise (a popular local bar) and Shade (a club). There are 2 bars we knew of open during the day at Storbay, one on the beach (above the steps), serving carib and stag for $12tt and another called “the waving gallery” located above the huts, charging $10tt for the same beers. They charge to rent beach chairs and umbrellas. We brought our own fold up chairs which was needed because the sand is very hot. Overall we were very satisfied with our stay. I would most definitely stay at this hotel again, due to the perfect location and price.
