It is a short drive from Otaru. It is interesting learning the history and a nice area to stroll through leisurely. There is a parking lot just across the street. Admission is free, so is the tasting!

Our hosts brought us here because they enjoy visiting here. We certainly had a beautiful day to appreciate the site, the museum and the story of the Taketsuru family.
There is no entrance fee and the tour is self guided. A free tasting is available at the end. However we paid to taste a single barrel malt in the Whisky Bar. It was a complex and challenging flavour experience and not for sale in the shop. Too expensive for us!
Very few single malts were on sale, so we left without making a purchase.

Lots of history, this is the place of the godfather of Japanese whisky, Tateksuru. The area reminds me a lot of Scotland, theres also a free tasting you can do too

I went to the Miyagikyo Distillery last week and they were much nicer there. They also seemed to have their story much straighter and you could find out how whiskey is made much easier in the Miyagikyo tour.

That being said, there's a lot more history here since this is the place that Taketsuru Masataka made his second first distillery. The Miyagikyo stills run on steam while the ones here run on coal, for example, making everything seem more organic.

The facilities at the Miyagikyo Distillery seemed newer and more sterile, but the tour guide here seemed colder, if that makes any sense.

Oh and the Yoichi whiskey is sharper and the Miyagikyo whiskey is softer and I think I prefer the Miyagikyo whiskey.

Scenic and the premier tasting room is great and affordable, but you can’t actually buy any of the hard to find whiskeys here. Skip it.
