“Definitely not for a relaxing holiday!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2011

Stayed here for 5 nights recently and was not impressed with the service at all. Anytime we went to ask something at reception we had to wait for anything up to 20 minutes. The staff were not very polite or helpful. Hotel was very under-staffed for the amount of people staying in it. The swimming pool area was constantly packed with kids so was very hard to get a sun lounger and also very noisy. I will definitely not be staying here again.

We went to the Spanish East Coast for Benicassim music festival, about 6 miles down the road from Marina D'Or and were reasonably impressed.

When we first arrived, late in the evening, we were dumbstruck at what Marina D'Or is. I would say it is a Spanish Blackpool, in that it seems to be a top resort for native Spaniards to holiday in but is somewhat tacky. The main street lit by bright green archways at night is a sight to behold. That being said, despite it being custom built for tourism, Marina D'Or is a relatively nice wee place. There are a few decent restaurants and bars. The local beer, Mahou, can be bought for around €3 a pint, and the measures of spirits in the clubs, especially Joker, are deadly. I would advise you to give Club Aqua a miss and to steer clear of the Irish Bar with its unattentive staff.

As for the Hotel Gran Duque, it seems relatively new as with most of the development in Marina D'Or. The rooms were nice - we had twin rooms with decent beds with a sofa bed should you need it. The balconies had sea views which was good. I would say it missed a few of the touches that you expect in a British hotel, e.g. a kettle, but there was a flat screen TV on the wall, water in the fridge and complimentary toiletries so really it wasn't bad at all. The bathroom was spacious and very clean, the shower in particular had enough room for a small party.

The pool area gets very busy but what else would you expect? If you get down there from when it opens at 10am until about 11, you should be able to get a couple of loungers. The pool is nice and while there is some entertainment for the kids (and occasionally the adults), I fail to see how this is a problem.

Breakfast is a bit rubbish. You can't fault the selection that they have - plenty of cheeses, meats etc. but the coffee is dire and there are not many pastries to choose from. The spanish black pudding, Morcilla, is worth a try though. There is a supermarket less than 10 minutes walk away so that's definitely a decent punt if you prefer to make your own lunch rather than eat out.

If we were coming back to Benicassim next year I wouldn't hesitate to book up again. Each room was €725 for 7 nights which we thought was alright given it was the peak of the tourist season and during Benicassim festival.

On our way to Spain, to visite our son, we found this hotel, to stay the night over. It was the only hotel that was open in the whole area. From the outside it looked big, but nice. The price of the room was 78 euro for two persons, breakfast included. We could have dinner until 20:30 pm. The room was clean, the bathroom was nice. We went to the dining room. There was a lot of people, older and younger running in the restaurant to get food. The staff did not manage to get the food ready, everything from the buffet tasted bad, was not good cooked and from very poor quality. It couldn't eat anything from it, i was afraid to become sick. We payed 32 euro for nothing. We didn't try the breakfast as we left early. The beds were so hard that i could not sleep. Like tables of stone. I try to make the bed softer with towels but i did not sleep 1 hour. For a hotel that looks that has 3 stars it is a shame to has this kind of horror for your guests.

On entering the hotel rooms (2 for 2 adults and 3 children) had not been revised: air conditioning leaks, phone does not work, there's toilet paper holder, no light on the terrace, cool, minibar, safes closed not be used.
The worst part is that you can not rest, there is a puppet show from 8 pm until dawn in front of the hotel, my kids at night telling me that they could not sleep because there was so much noise. Also we can hear distorted noise of "animation" at night, we had to buy some silicone plugs to read a little at night before going to bed. In the pool also very loud music, a kind of pachanga.
Defects were reported at the hotel, but most were not managed (they only enabled one of the safes). As the scandal at night, they did not have the detail to provide room change, even though we were with kids (the youngest is two years old). When I left I reiterated these complaints, I offered my contact data to their customer care in order to contact me and explain my complaints, but they refused.
I hope to be in time to take away the desire to come to people that values these comments, I would have been very thankful if someone would have told me here previously,

Spanish families clearly have different expectations from us. No room service, no mini- bar - but you do get a little fridge with two small bottles of water for your stay. (We went on a trip to the supermarket to get some supplies but had to swap a kidney and beg for some cutlery from the buffet restaurant to be able to eat it).

No kettle or anything like that in the room and impossible to get an iron or ironing board. The cavernous, utterly soulless buffet restauraunt is to be avoided. We managed breakfast a couple of times but hunger turned out to be preferable. It's a classic Eurobuffet with knobs on, fair enough, but the only coffee you can get is from a machine and pretty disgusting. Lots of pastries in cellophane. Juice is also from a machine and is very sweet (Kids like it I guess). We were not brave enough to cross that that particular threshold for dinner. No. Thank. You.

The bar is an experience. Equally soulless when quiet, rammed full of hyperactive Spanish under-10s bouncing around to pumping kid-friendly fare until midnight - every single night. To be fair, one of the barmen is genuinely friendly, helpful and a credit to his profession. Didn't catch his name but he is fairly bald and you will know him if you go there because his friendliness stands out like a beacon at Hotel Gran Duque. Top bloke,

Some of the staff are helpful but many are not. Clearly the hotel receives English people very rarely - basically about once a year when Benicassim is on - but while one can of course understand a lack of basic English from some of the front-of-house employees, the surly attitude and unhelpfulness of some is not forgiveable, I'm afraid.

My wife and I got back to the hotel around 12.45am one night, sober and well-behaved (unlike some groups I'm sure they had to put up with during the week), and asked the night superviser if there was any way we could acquire a couple of bottles of water to take up the room. The answer was a plain and definitive "No". This credit to the hotel profession offered no apology or explanation and practically shooed us away so she could carry her chat with her colleague. Nice one. Cheers.

The pool area is nice enough, but does get very busy. The mornings by the pool in particular can be 'interesting' as you will have to put up with Kiddie aerobics and games in the pool, largely set to a bass-heavy driving euro-dance beat at a volume which will loosen your fillings, if not your teeth. There's always earplugs, I guess.

Lots of rules to negotiate, This hotel loves its rules - lot's of things you can't do. Don't think of entering the buffet hangar with bare feet, oh no. They will shoot. Don't have a soft drink can or plastic cup anywhere near the pool, but it may be okay if you are a Spanish person, actually, yes that's appears to be okay. This rule will change every other day with no explanation why. It is also acceptable to smoke around the pool, particularly if there are small children to share your smoke with. When in Rome I guess...

Positives...The room was quite nice, athough the beds are hard enough to have given me a bad back.

Don't come to this hotel, or Marina D'or for that matter, if you are expecting any kind of consistently warm welcome, or any kind of genuine 'Spanish' experience. Someone has cleverly convinced many Spanish people that this is what their dream holiday should be all about, and who are we to argue with what they want?

If you are a Spanish family with kids, go for it!!
