Nice hotel needs some work for the price but definitely the best on the island

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Feb 2024via mobile
We stayed in a beach pool villa. The room was lovely, kept beautifully clean. The food and cocktails were nice enough.
We had a walk around the island and Irene definitely looked like the nicest hotel.
I do think that the service although good is not comparable to the price being charged for rooms.
Just as an example we arrived on a boat from Langkawi, we were met on a boiling hot beach by the hotel representative (who was lovely). There is a considerable wait for passports customs etc. it would have been nice to have been offered a bottle of water and maybe a cold towel. Just a suggestion.
Also we felt like naughty school children the way we were made to sit and wait as they checked our room before we were allowed to leave. Maybe you could think of a better way of doing this? I understand that some people are dishonest in what they take from rooms but we are not all like that!
I hope my criticism is taken as constructive.

Lovely new hotel on the best beach on koh lipe. Food and drinks were great. There are only about 15 rooms, all large, some with a massage area attached. I think all have a pool too. This is a sister hotel to the Idyllic, so the spa is located there; for services at the Irene, the masseuse comes to your room (upstairs in a separate area so no worries about interruptions because the rest of the family is there). The app was useful for chatting with staff (translates automatically) and ordering to the room. Service in room was inconsistent and slow. Service at the main pool bar and restaurant was much faster. No one spoke much English which made for some miscommunication but you are in far south remote thailand so would expect this- just set your expectations as I noticed reading other reviews this upset some travelers.

The hotel took care of arranging all transportation to/from Hat Yai (went very smoothly and all on time!), a snorkeling trip, dinner/fire show at another resort, and free painting activities for our 4 yr old. There is also an on demand shuttle to take you to walking street in the evenings, but it’s only a 10 min walk if you don’t want to ride.

Would definitely return, we had a great time and loved the Irene!

The Irene Pool Villa Resort is situated on a beautiful stretch of beach, on Sunset Beach to be exact on Koh Lipe, looking on to Ko Adang to the North East.

My wife and I stayed at the resort for a week at the end of January and would characterize our stay as a mixture of good, very good and “needs a bit of work in some areas”!

The Villas: First of all, the Villas are lovely! Very nicely decorated, with a large, very comfortable beds and thankfully, firm pillows for sleeping! The rooms are equipped with TV’s - there are or were no Tv channels connected during our stay there, so make sure you bring your Netflix / YouTube / Amazon prime credentials if you want to watch anything.

The villas are equipped with their own pools; decent size, but frankly too cold. Maybe it’s just a thing with Thailand, but We have stayed in pool villas elsewhere in Thailand, where they were also cold. It should be cool, but not so cold that you want to get out after 1 minute.

As the pool is likely the main reason people book the resort - to have a bit of luxury - you should maybe look in to heating them a little bit..

The Food: was of a high-quality; having read some of the previous reviews, where there was a mixture of reports, we found the food to be very good, from the breakfast, to lunch- an array of Thai, western and Pan-Asian options.

The breakfast is served in a way where there are about 8 different options and you pick what you want.

All of the breakfast options we tried, the food was very good, although one thing I will suggest, is maybe not bringing it all at the same time, considering there is so much. It felt like a rush to eat all the hot food, before it went cold.

Privacy: the resort is on a stretch of public beach, which considering the size of Koh Lipe is fair. However, if you are staying in one of the villas along the front of the beach, only a small rope fence, separates the villas from ‘non-guests’. People just walk along in front of your villa, in the area where the Sun loungers are and just gape in through your window, while you’re sitting there.

Quite frankly for the price that is being paid, a lot more should be done, to make the experience a lot more private.

Influencer Central: as the island’s sole 5* resort, offering great pools, villas and decor, it obviously attracts a fair amount of people looking to cash in on their social media hits.

On two separate days, we watched in bewilderment as a young couple - WHO WEREN’T EVEN STAYING at the resort, might I add - run amok around the guest only beach area, riding a bike around this area.

We get it - it’s 2024 and this is the era we live in, but it’s really quite distracting when you’re trying to relax.

staff: the staff at the resort provide the standard, excellent warmth that come with 99.9% of all Thai resorts; plenty of smiles and kindness.

The only thing I would suggest however, is a bit of extra training in some areas. We would enjoy a drink or some snacks in front of our villa in the afternoon, with the glasses/plates still sitting there overnight. .. just something to take into account and I’m sure it will be addressed over time.

The app; like most resorts these days, that are relying on apps to communicate with guests, I would suggest improving the chat feature. By the last half of our trip it didn’t work at all, so maybe a few bugs to work out.

Checkout and getting off the island; bear in mind that Koh Lipe is an island some way off the Thai coast. It takes a couple of hours by boat to get to either the Pak Bara pier or similar in Langkawi, before a drive to either airport.

We booked a private boat, which meant we hoped to leave whenever we wanted to, in order to not arrive at the airport too early, but unfortunately we had to leave at 08:30 for the speedboat and the drive to Hat Yai airport.

We were over 3 hours early for our flight.. so moving forward please listen to your guests wishes as to when they wish to leave.

Summary: all in all we can say that the experience was positive, with some room for improvement; I think the resort will continue to get better and better.

It is easily the best resort on Koh Lipe… take from that what you will.

I doubt I’d go back to Koh Lipe, but I’d recommend Irene resort for those looking for the highest end type of accommodation available.

Regarding privacy concerns, we understand your expectations and apologize for any inconvenience caused by non-guests accessing the beach area. We'll explore additional measures to enhance the privacy experience for our valued guests.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the app chat feature not functioning properly on your mobile, there has been cases on some phones the app does not work or lags due to software version update and for the early departure time for your boat transfer, we always ensure and calculate the time and suggest guests for private boat timing so they don’t miss flights to next destination according to sea conditions and water levels.
We are glad to hear that you had a positive experience with us and appreciate your recommendation of the Irene Resort for those seeking high-end accommodation. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and exceed your expectations. Kind regards Management

We enjoyed our stay however this is not a 5 star hotel, very expensive hotel for what it is.

The staff are all lovely, food was delicious but they definitely need a buffet option for guests.

Unfortunately the resort is not private for what you pay and on plenty of occasions people that were not staying in the resort were accessing the front villas and taking photos and videos even though there is a sign saying guests only! Maybe the signs need to be bigger? Unless people are ignoring the signs.

You had people posing daily for photographs outside our villa for hours at a time so the resort can post on their Instagram I get you need to market your hotel but this is extremely off putting for the guests who pay a lot of money to stay, also none of these people actually stayed at the resort so it got very annoying and not relaxing especially when they took photos of our sunbeds with our belonging on them 😅

Overall nice stay but unfortunately wouldn’t return.

We truly value your suggestions regarding the buffet option for guests and the privacy concerns. Your feedback about the resort not being as private as expected and the issue with non-guests accessing the front villas is duly noted, since beaches in Koh Lipe are not private and are open to public, we will certainly explore ways to address these concerns, including reviewing the signage and taking appropriate measures to ensure the privacy and comfort of our guests. Why 2*…well the overall experience needs to be evaluated vs the price paid for the accomodation…and this resort is just nowhere near being worth 1000$ per night.
Not worth more than 400 per night honestly.

The most important thing you should know is the resort is on the “main beach” and basically longtails boats go back and forth ALL DAY LONG..as most seem to have broken engines you feel like you are in the middle of a war ALL DAY!!! We were expecting a little paradise island (like maldives etc) but its so noisy and the beach is 1 where all hotels are basically is just not work overspending!

We booked 4 nights here and as the resort was full we booked 2 nights in bulow grand casa before (which we paid 400$ per night).
I expected the hotel to be a step-up in terms of service-food&beverage-location and overall experience, unfortunately this was NOT the case so if you are considering spending 1k per night i would strongly recommend you to either save your money or go to another island because ko lipe has a “chilled/laid back yet very noisy and “alternative vibe” and if you are interested in visiting the island just dont waste money thinking your will find a “luxury” experince in irene which is better than other places because its not.

Food & beverage: 2*
this is definitely the worse part of the stay as they really need to do something about it.
Breakfast is this “set menu” thing which 2 days out of 4 we had to just leave to the staff because it takes 30-40 minutes from when you order it and we had excursion or diving to go to. They should have a highly curated buffet as most 5* for guests to get what they like and start their day quickly but no…. probably the set menu option makes it easier to prepare and not only it takes ages but the food is really below average…croissants are dry, pancakes chewy and so on.

Service: 2*
You never really feel like anybody is attending you as they do in other 5* resorts. Its impersonal and staff at restaurants just forget things or take 1 hour to bring lunch and after asking 5 times they finally bring lunch without any cutlery, napkins etc.
On the second day we asked how lonng laundry would take as we needed clean underwear-tshirts etc and the staff said if given in the morning we would have it back the following morning. We therefore gave our landry…and we got it back 2 days later at NIGHT right nefore leaving…we mentioned that we obviously needed our clean things to use during our stay, but nothing we were charged with laundry to bring back home:)

Rooms: 4/5*

Rooms are definitely very nice and fresh/modern. Unfortunately someone thought it would be a great idea to have the ac pointing right at your bed which regardless of whether you try to move the direction of the air it makes it difficult to keep it on at night if you dont want to get sick.
Also the pools dont get straight sunrays sonthe water is cold and you basically wont be using them if you go during christmas time

Location 3*
Its just soooo noisy all day you really cant say you found your little corner of paradise because you literally dont want to be spending time just relaxing on the beach!

Dinner or the beach:5*
If you do decide to stay here, dinner or the beach is very nice and worth trying

Overall, there is a LOT of room for improvement but the dealbreaker is PRICE…if you expect people to pay 1k per night, you have to deliver something “special” and better than other adjacent hotels which on average cost 200-400$ per night and right now its just not the case unfortunately.

I am writing this because I think everyone who is thinking to book should know all of this. I wish we were lucky to have someone write the real situation, it would have definitely saved us money and time.

First day at Irene, and it kicked off with a nice welcome drink and ice cream. The villas? Pretty nice, but let’s be real – not worth the high-season 1000 euros per night. I’d peg it closer to 250 euros in the best-case scenario. The view? Stunning. Bed? Super comfy.

Now, the harsh reality. If you’re dreaming of relaxation, forget it. The noise from speedboats near the beach is unbearable – like a war zone with constant rifle-like sounds. You’ll find yourself shouting just to chat on the beach. Sure, the room is sealed, so you don’t hear much with the windows closed, but what’s the point of a beach villa if you can’t enjoy the beach, right? 😂

There’s a tree house with dirty sheets initially, but they fixed it up after we checked in.

Now, the room. First night was a nightmare. AC blowing directly at the bed, risking pneumonia if left on at night. Turn it off, and you’re greeted by a blinking blue light – they patched it with a piece of white paper the next day, but the nightclub vibe lingered. Also, the fan won’t work if you turn off the master switch for the lights. Sweating under a blinking light – not exactly my idea of a good night.

Bathroom? Nice. Outdoor pool? Cold – never dipped in.

Breakfast? A joke. Choose between 10 similar set menus – worst breakfast ever in any 5 or 4-star hotel. Save your energy, just skip it.

Now, the restaurant. Staff struggles with English. First day, ordered a salad and beef noodles – waited an hour, then told to wait longer after the manager stepped in. Finally got the food, wrong order for my bf, but he kept it as he was starving. My salad? Late, and it tasted like bitter washing liquid – had to spit it out.

Asked for water, got a bottle after 10 minutes – a tiny plastic one with no glass. This is supposed to be a 5-star hotel. Asked for a glass, got it after 5 minutes. How is this even a 3-star hotel with a restaurant that can’t serve food or drinks?

Beach waiting? Sea noise is unbearable – worst beach resort experience ever.

BF organized a private beach dinner for my birthday – nice and romantic. Can’t recall the food much, but Salim, the server, was great. Along with the cleaning ladies, they were the only ones we liked.

Spa disappointment – one person working, no couples massages, and we couldn’t book a masseuse for the whole stay.

Laundry took 2 & half days, only got it back when we asked for it.

We seriously need a holiday after this holiday.

The hotel has a potential and maybe with the right management it could get a 4 star one day, but at the moment it does not deserve 2 stars.

About Koh Lipe – if you’re a diver, stay inland, not on the beach. Dive in the morning, soak up the sun, and spend evenings in town. Lots of nice local restaurants.
