Kikusuikan is located in Osawa onsen, a small hot spring village which is a short drive from Hanamaki city. There is a cluster of about 4-5 inns along the riverside with bridges connecting them which makes a nice scenic stroll. The inn itself is a traditional thatched wooden building which makes it really special as there are not so many of these left in good repair and many are private homes or museums. The rooms are typical of basic onsen, nothing special, but have a nice view over the river. The bathing area is a small indoor wooden bath- there is no outdoor bath here (rotemburo) though all guests in the various inns may use the baths in the others. The food was decent but nothing out of the ordinary, but the dining room not that nice. However it was good value at 8,000 yen so no complaints about anything. There are other larger and more fancy inns, but if you would like to try a more traditional rural experience (or try a traditional onsen on a limited budget), this is a good bet. I would go back for sure.
