This ryokan stands out for its warm and genuine hospitality. It is a traditional Japanese Ryokan, with Japanese rooms only, and shared bathroom facilities (Japanese style only). It has an Onsen, which is essentially a bath for one in this case.

This was our first hotel to experience the true Japanese personal hospitality: the owner gave us a warm welcome and went out his way to look after us, even offering to drive us to a local viewing point, and calling us from our room to witness a local children's Halloween tradition.

We chose to have a set dinner and breakfast included. Dinner was exceptional and a traditional Japanese feast of soup, sushi, oyster rice, slow roasted beef and delicious fresh fist. Breakfast was similar, which challenged our Western morning tastebuds somewhat. We travelled with our two year old, and this was the only hotel that specifically provided children's meals for her.

Rooms are Japanese with tatami mats and futon beds which magically appeared while we were at dinner. Beds were extremely comfy, cosy and clean. The Ryokan itself feels somewhat dated and at times we had to look past the obvious maintenance requirements, also in the Onsen.

We stayed at this Ryokan while cycling the Shimanami-Kaido cycle route from Onomichi to Imabari. Many of the towns, including this one, are functional and industrial with working harbours, rather than scenic and pretty. This is compensated by the friendliness of the people. We saw the real, friendly, and working side of Japan, rather than tourist locations.

Recommended for cyclists looking for a genuine and warm, if somewhat dated ryokan.
