“Much better places out there KEEP LOOKING!”

This is my original review for airbnb from our stay at the eco lodge. Everything I wrote up in this review is the 100% truth. Joe has already changed many of the items talked about on their website to make it look like I'm making things up and is very good at twisting the facts and making the customer look petty and ungrateful. I had a bad feeling going into this after reading the way they responded to negative reviews and I should have trusted my gut. Most of all the negative reviews are correct and alot of the problems still exist. Many of them are small problems that are easily fixed but there are a lot of them and it is just annoying. His go to excuse is "we are off the beaten path". The house is 15 min from a major highway!
And another helpful hint I used enterprise for my 4x4 and paid $266 for 10 days vamos was over $500 (their preferred rental company).

My friends and I stayed at the "Eco lodge" for about a week. The house is nice with a great view but could definitely use some TLC. Pros- Good view, nice kitchen, remote, well furnished, the waterfalls are very fun to check out but they aren't even on the property, the pool is nice to get into at the end of the day. Cons- They sent us the first part of the welcome packet as soon as we booked the house but we didn't receive the second part with all the important information until 2 weeks before the reservation, even though I asked for it long before that (they claim they had to update some info. but from what we saw there was nothing to be updated). No one at the house for check in even though we they made a big deal out of letting them know when we would be there (we confirmed 2pm), ceiling fans barely even go around (useless!), A/C did not work in the main bedroom the very first night and they apparently already new about it because when I emailed them they already had the part to fix it just wanted to find a time to do it that week also saying most our guests don't require the a/c remembering this is an "eco lodge'', the only thing eco about the place is a solar water heater (they have a grassed area they watered for over 5hrs one day after it rained every night using more water than we used all week), large mattress cover roled up in kitchen area with picture frames stacked on it (Big 6'L x 2' W), security cameras make it seem very creepy around the deck and pool area, owners push for you to use their preferred car rental company and for you to take the caretakers mangrove tour, downstairs showerhead is clogged up, laundry room is very cluttered. I could go on but you get the picture. After reading the other reviews most of them are spot on for the most part. The owners seem to be overbearing and act like they are doing you a favor by letting you stay at their place. Even though you are paying a pretty high price for what you are getting. I would not recommend this place to stay if it was in the same condition we had it. A little bit of TLC and some paint would do a lot for the place. The owners reaction to other reviews was very unprofessional and off putting, more of a professional approach would go a long way. Prior to out stay at the ecolodge my girlfriend and I stayed in the jungle for 4 days w/o electricity at a house only accessible by boat and it was better maintained than the ecolodge. The caretaker Manuel was amazing and did everything he could to make us feel at home. The house also sat on 67 acres of jungle with a private beach. $50 a night! Worth every penny!

Management Response
3 May 2016
After Mike's first review on Airbnb, we knew there were definitely a few misunderstandings which I thought I had clarified in my online response. Below, guests can see that we tried to explain and clarfiy to Mike's about the purpose (and timing) of the welcome packs, our recommendations on car hire and and local tours etc and the explanation of how much of an ‘ecolodge' we really are etc etc but now I see he's chosen to continue being not only incredibly unfair in his comments but sadly seems to now be making some quite serious insinuations and allegations which are not just completely unfounded but on a personal level are really quite upsetting. I have reached out to Mike to try an understand where this is all coming from but to date he hasn’t answered back.

Since Pura Vida Ecolodge opened it’s doors we have taken great pride in looking after our guests and doing everything we can to make sure their stay is as special and unique as possible. We’ve been blessed with an almost constant flow of 5-star reviews and consequently have been awarded various certificates of Excellence here on TripAdvisor and the Super Host status on Airbnb, so we’re inevitably hugely disappointed to receive such a low rating and such negative comments from Mike

So that our future guests are clear: I haven't changed a single thing on the website. Really not sure where this allegation is coming from. The nature of the welcome pack was explained very clearly right from the beginning when he made the booking (along with how and when they would be sent). There is also a Friendly disclaimer which all guests read before making their reservations. So I'm afraid Mike really has got the wrong end of the stick with this…

Likewise, I also definitely have not twisted anything, I merely took the opportunity to put the record straight publicly so to speak as Mike had unfortunately misunderstood our good intentions along with the purpose of our advice and recommendations

Very surprised & somewhat disappointed to receive this review as during their stay Mike even popped us a message to say the ecolodge had been ‘very nice' and their checkin experience was ‘good'. So for the benefit of future guests, we will try to give as clear feedback on Mike's comments. It's so important to us that all our guests have a really fun and special experience up at Pura Vida Ecolodge and having read this review we can see that quite a few things have sadly some how been completely 'mis-interpreted' or indeed 'mis-experienced'. Welcome Pack - we always send out Part 2 as close to the guests arrival as possible but still allowing them 2-3 weeks to read through & prepare. This is 100% genuine, as we try and keep this as up-to-date as possible as there are so many variables in Costa Rica and the weather extremes alone can mean that one route is perhaps more advisable than the next etc etc. So many of our guests have actually really appreciated the welcome packs & updates so it was really quite disappointing that our intentions were so badly misunderstood here. Gersan (our housekeeper) will always be available for checkin up at the lodge as long as we're aware what time guests are arriving. Ceiling fans - Both suites and the upstairs living area are equipped with fully functional (very large) fans. The fans have 3-speed fittings and given their size, the first 2 (slower) speeds do take a while to ‘get going'. Contrary to what Mike says, they are fully functional and very effective. AC controls - There was indeed a problem with one of the AC controls prior to Mike's arrival. But we managed to purchase and program the replacement AC control (for the downstairs suite) in time for Mike's friends arrival. The ecolodge itself is designed in a way to take advantage of the lovely mountain & sea breezes and being an ecolodge, we do of course encourage guests to be mindful when it comes the AC, lights, fans & water etc. That said, we of course want all our guests to be as comfortable as possible throughout their stay. It would appear from the review that Mike has sadly misunderstood our good intentions here. For absolute clarity, Pura Vida Ecolodge is a lot more ‘eco' than just having a solar panel. The entire design and construction of the lodge is based on strong philosophies of eco-design and sustainability. The majority of the lodge's structure is made from locally sourced woods and bamboo (a massively sustainable material because of the speed it grows). We were even involved in the local cultivation project that has seen bamboo now used as a viable, responsible and sustainable material in La Zona Sur's construction projects. The lodge has also been designed (the living area especially) to take advantage of the sea/mountain breezes, in an effort to reduce the lodge's footprint etc. Then there are the naturally compositing toilets, water recycling (for the most part used in our water irrigation system around the house - the grass that Mike saw heavily watered was recently planted, this combined with the fact that is had been extraordinarily dry should help explain the 'excessive; watering). Then we have rain catchment tanks and a whole load of other things that may not be massively visable but are going on 'behind the scenes'. We have also, from start to finish, sourced local labour (from architects to engineers, topographers to labourers and nowadays with our whole team being based in the nearby village of Coronado, we have provided local employment and opportunity for quite a few of the young local population. A massive step in the right direction when talking about eco and sustainability. Then back to the lodge, all our mattresses & beds are made from 100% organic materials (mainly coconut fibres) and likewise all our sheets & towels are all 100% organic. The list goes on and on but we felt that it was very important to try and illustrate that Pura Vida Ecolodge is indeed very eco so much so that we are even in the process of receiving our recognition from the Rain Forest Alliance and Costa Rica's Blue Flag Program. Mike's criticism are sadly quite unfounded. Rather than being ‘overbearing' or ‘pushy' as we tried to explain to Mike, we simply recommend Vamos Rent-a-Car as we have had good feedback (service & car fleet) from all our guests who have used them over the last 3 years and on the other side of the coin, we've had quite a few negative experiences when it comes to other rental companies. Likewise, recommending Gersan's boat tour was merely an invitation to share the opportunity to enjoy this unique 'off the beaten track experience' - no obligation whatsoever! Everything we say and do is for the sole purpose of trying to make our guests 'Pura Vida Experience' as wonderful as possible so I can only say I'm so sorry that Mike felt that we have been over-powering in any way and hopefully now that we've explained this, he, and future guests alike can see our intentions are only good.
