A fantastic view over the bay & peninsula, great, spacious & modern rooms (we had the honeymoon suite) with super bedding, overall the staff was very friendly. And it's a nice place to observe birdlife as you have a view from above on pelicans, frigatebirds, aras & co.

3 negatives :
- the property is pretty small, and it is noticeable : noise from neighbours, the deck around the swimming pool is too small, there are only 4 deckchairs, and one parasol !
- We were not impressed by the restaurant at all : a lot of fuss, culinary techniques are obviously mastered - but the associations of tastes just didn't work at all for either of us.
- Our room had just been finished when rented to us - however, there were still quite a few technical problems (no electricity (& aircon etc) for 2.5 days out of our 6 days ... (We did receive a compensation : one snack and one drink ...). Also, there was no spa (though advertised on the website if I remember well), they were still building it.

But what a view ...

El Castillo was our last destination: It's a classy and intimate hotel, boasting great views and sunset.

Positive:
- Very warm welcome with cocktails and a breathtaking view from the beautiful open air lobby overlooking the infinity pool and the ocean beyond. (El Castillo is situated hillside so a 4WD is recommended)
- Two-bedroom apartment over the shed with a cozy living room, spacious white linen beds
- Staff: always very friendly and recommended us good local restaurants
- Gourmet dinner prepared by Chef Pablo in Castillo's Kitchen: beautiful table outdoors below the roof with ocean view next to hanging tea lights and the typical night sounds of Costa Rica. Very delicious food and exquisitely prepared.
- Feedback: deputy general manager was very eager to receive our feedback

Recommendations:
- Safe was locked accidentally and never unlocked again
- Key wasn't working one day and it took quite a while to get a spare one
- Bathroom: light is not really bright and toilet was constantly flushing from time to time (and therefore also smelling a bit)
- Windows: maybe put mosquito nets on a windows as all have small gaps
- Just one umbrella and not enough sunbeds for all guests
- WiFi didn't always work

El Castillo is a classy and intimate hotel, boasting great views and sunset and top quality service.

Our ocean view room was good sized and simple, with a balcony seating area and equipped with all you would need. The larger rooms also have a sofa area but we were happy sitting by the pool to read.

The staff are excellent and able to cater to most needs, they also helped arrange a couple of excellent activities - kayaking and canyoning.

There's a choice for lunch and dinner from an all day menu or I recommend in the evening having Pablo's chefs menu - exquisite locally sourced food creatively transformed into delicious meals. Breakfast choices are good - my only criticism would be that food can be slow to come out especially at breakfast.

The bar has an extensive cocktail menu, and a range of quality spirits (some top tequilas).

Access is just off the main road and up a steep track, with a steep short concrete track to the door. You can manage with a normal car buy 4WD may be preferable.

The hotel is a short 20 min walk to a lovely beach and to a few other local restaurants, although driving more pleasant when it's hot. Surfing and other activities close by in Uvita (ten mins) and Dominical (30 mins).

All told a wonderful hotel with great food, views and service.

This is a truly great boutique hotel, with just 6 rooms and a killer restaurant. The views are stupendous, the staff bends over backwards for you, and it's beautifully designed. It is an adults-only hotel, but I didn't realize this when booking and so showed up with my family of four during Spring break for their 2 bedroom suite. This is including a 1 year old toddler and a 10 year old. They were so gracious about it and actually apologetic that the hotel was not more geared towards kids. I can't say enough good things about this hotel.

We chose El Castillo for 3 nights to end our 3 week trip to Costa Rica in a little luxury... and what a choice. This place is outstanding. You will have a real ‘wow’ moment when you arrive and see THAT view for the first time. The room (2) was gorgeous and comfortable. We had a leisurely breakfast every morning and by the time we returned to our room it had already been serviced.
What was REALLY outstanding about El Castillo was the staff. I can’t praise them highly enough and how they gelled together and made us feel part of that. They were all charming, witty, engaging and saw to your every need without being overbearing. Something very special. We didn’t have a hire car (I’d recommend one in this part of the country) and they did their best to get taxis for us, which could also be challenging so a couple of times they even drove us to close-by places themselves.
We enjoyed the Chef de table experience with Chef Juan Pablo on one of the nights and took recommendations from the staff on other places to try in Ojochal the other nights (Citrus being the favourite).
We also loved the island experience, though be warned - it is rudimentary rather than luxury and that’s part of what we loved about it!
One of the best hotel experiences I have ever had. We miss everyone already and are dreaming of when we can return!
