Tokoname is a place for ceramic. Get off train at Tokoname station and quick ten minutes walk to ceramic street. Cafes are there, galleries are there, of course small and lots of ceramic shops that is famous for lucky cat that is cute! It can be good strolling around before your flight from Nagoya centrair airport.

We stopped here for the afternoon from Nagoya. It turned out we were here on a monday which was a mistake as the main museum and 90% of the shops were closed. However, a few places were still open and it turned out almost to be cooler because there were few people there, so we spent a lot of time talking with the potters. One woman was married to an American (also a potter there) and explained about the glazes etc. At one place the potter (who had made one of the adorable cats along the wall heading to the pottery path from the station) even made us tea! He had visited the US and spoke enough English to talk about his work and compare it to American artists' ideas about making tea cups etc. So, although we don't recommend going on Monday, we still had fun. It's a short train ride from Nagoya - we decided to stay there overnight but you could stop, leave your bags in a coin locker in Nagoya station and just go for the day and then get back on the Shinkansen to Kyoto easily (if you were headed from Gifu Prefecture, or Tokyo).

Part of this town has been kept in a very old style where the roads are tiny, and you walk around to see the various kilns and pottery makers. Sweet and enjoyable with a couple cafes in between. I really enjoyed it! Some tiny boutiques too!
