We had planned an overnight stay at the Jumuia Guesthouse in view of our visit to the Nakuru National Park on the following day. We had based our choice pretty much on the previous reviews on TripAdvisor.
Everything started out all right from the moment we arrived. The rooms were a little small, but considering the price, the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the buffet dinner, everything pointed towards us giving top marks. It was when we retired for the night that we had a first inkling of what was to come. Already at 9.00pm, the loud songs from a nearby Pentecostal Church of East Africa congregation were clearly audible among other evening sounds. Later at night, however, with fewer noises around, the songs became a real source of disturbance. By 4.00 and 5.00am, each new song, clearly amplified by loudspeakers placed outside the church - not inside - took on a distinctly criminal tinge. In short, a completely sleepless night.
On the following morning, the reception staff told us that the church had previously received complaints and lowered the volume as a result, but then things had got back to "normal", i.e. badly noisy for the neighbours. We were also told that this was only a Friday night service: that was of course small comfort to us, but this may be important information for other travellers.
For us, in sum, a totally ruined overnight stay.
