Owner description: The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife, and promotes Conservation, Education, Recreation, and Research. It is also the first nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. We are committed to the conservation of Belize's wildlife and its habitats through the establishment of a well maintained zoological facility and education center, both poised to bring about a greater environmental awareness to the people living in Belize, and to visitors from abroad. In 2014, the Zoo became the first nature destination in the country accessible to persons with physical disabilities. TBZ believes that by bringing the people closer to the animals, which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and wish to protect them for future generations. All Zoo "residents" were once pets; donated to the Zoo; rescues found injured, abandoned or orphaned and brought in rehabilitation; or born at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo receives no financial support from the Government of Belize, and generates funding to care for its residents through admission fees, tours, donations, and adoption and membership programs.

I would not normally go to a zoo but the reviews persuaded me this might be different and it was. Not a conventional zoo, more a national conservation project. Rescued and abandoned animals in as close to their natural habitat as is possible, all clearly really well cared for and happy.

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback!

The name "zoo" and its significance is a conversation we constantly have with our supporters, who, like you, feel it does not do our work justice.

However, we are part of a growing network of zoological professionals that are advocating for the powerful role that zoos can have in conservation. In fact, some zoos have single-handedly brought species back from the brink of extinction, and repopulated them in the wild!
It's a matter of "taking the name back," so to speak, and making zoos represent strong positive aspects of wildlife care and conservation to offset the negative history they have had as "animal prisons."

I'm going to make this real simple. I am a zoo keeper who has worked at various zoos, and this is one of the best if not the best I have ever been to. Seeing animals where they are in the correct environment, all friendly to a shocking degree, and none with stereotypic anxiety behaviors. Hat's off to the director and keepers. Great job.

Animals were nice. Staff outside us needs to work on their kindness. We speak same language yet a language barrier.

More a nature preserve than a zoo, all animals are native to Belize and therefore live in their natural habitat. Animals are all healthy and well taken care of. Many are rescues and you can read their stories along with info about the species. Great place to wander for a couple of hours and learn about the Belize ecosystem.
Zoo also offers accommodations at the Tropical Education Centre - we stayed in a pond house, what a treat to spend time in a cottage surrounded by wildlife. Cottage was very comfortable, with private washroom and kitchenette. Bottled water is supplied. Screened-in veranda with hammock and rocking chair were perfect to relax and watch the turtles in the pond and birds in the trees. Breakfast and dinner were included, food was basic but good. Really relaxing, lovely place, I highly recommend staying here at least one night if you are in Belize. Lots of mosquitoes though, bring insect repellent.

We really didn’t expect much but we absolutely loved it. Had the pleasure of meeting the zoo’s founder and leader and she was amazing. Definite worth the time. It’s not an extravagant place, very natural; which to us made it so much the better. Great cause to support as well.
