“Horrendous conditions and management”
Reviewed 20 March 2017 for a stay in February 2017

Stayed here for 11 nights which I arranged for myself and two colleges as we were doing professional development exams in the area and wanted somewhere relaxing to facilitate our study. Unfortunately the stay was anything but relaxing! On arrival the house was freezing cold and was filled with fumes from a faulty oil boiler situated in the kitchen. Over the coming days we were misinformed about engineers coming to repair the boiler over which time the extent of fumes in the house worsened to the point where we were experiencing headaches, nausiousness and other health issues and resorted to sitting in the house with windows and doors wide open. On the fourth day of our stay an engineer did repair the boiler and reported multiple parts in the boiler leaking fumes into the house. For the next three nights the extent of fumes in the house was still so strong that we continued to need to keep windows and doors open whilst in the house, and considering in was mid-February this was in no way comfortable. For the remaining five nights conditions were somewhat better with a decrease in the extent of fumes which were mainly contained to the kitchen at this point. On requesting compensation for the horrendous, unhealthy and expressly stressful situation the landlord is refusing to negotiate a reasonable compensation for the toxic conditions we endured, and has accused us of only being out to get money. During the stay, at no point did the landlord ask if we were ok, with the main extent of conversation being how stressful the situation was for them and how much money it was costing them. The house itself was lovely, but don't expect to be treated well if you have issues with the accommodation.

Management Response

It's very disappointing to read such a damming review when we did all we could to rectify the situation as quickly as possible.
Our heating engineer serviced the boiler prior to the girls arriving and it was working fine.
When our guests arrived however on the Wednesday evening the cottage was cold. The boiler was reset however and it started to warm the place.
I arranged for our heating engineer to go back the next day to take another look at the boiler. He couldn't find a fault.
He went back again on the Friday as we received another call from the girls. Once again the boiler was working fine. He went away, had a coffee at the pub over the road, came back and the boiler was still working. In his words he said"the radiators were hot, too hot to keep my hand on". I asked about the smell of oil and he said he couldn't smell anything.
He left some electric heaters in the property just in case there were any problems overnight.
As the guests were still reporting a smell of oil we arranged for an out of hours engineer to visit for a second opinion. Despite what has been said in the review, we were concerned about what the girls were saying and wanted to put things right for them. The stressful situation was that we had one engineer telling us that there wasn't a problem, and the girls saying something completely different.
The second engineer reported back and said that the pipe feeding the boiler had a slight crack in it and so a small amount of oil had leaked onto a wooden plinth that the boiler sits on. This was causing the smell but it was by any means toxic.
The pipe was fixed. Yes it cost us over £1,000 to put it right. No small sum but the issue for us was to put things right for our guests and as quickly as possible.
Once the girls returned home they asked me for a compensation payment. I initially offered £150 and they replied, we want more like 50% back. I upped my offer to £210, over a 20% refund but that was not acceptable either.
I apologised profusely to Laura and most certainly had the girls best interests at heart. I thought they were understanding of our predicament, it certainly seemed that way whilst they were staying at the property. It was only when the girls returned home that I received the compensation email.

The cottage was very comfortable, and we felt at home very quickly in it! Lots of welcoming touches, like board games and books for the children. Wendlebury was a great location for us too; nice and quiet but very conveniently situated for Bicester and Oxford. Bicester has a train station with a direct train to London, which only takes 90 minutes. The children were sorry to leave!

“Comfortable and Convenient”

A pleasant comfortable stay whilst we flew from the nearby Windrushers gliding at Bicester airfield. Cottage was well kept, some, but not all, of the kitchen equipment seemed a strange collection. TV appeared to be missing a divi box, or else w could not work it so instructions would have helped. Wi-fi connection was slow, and mobile signal non-existent.

Overall I would recommend the cottage.
