Maithan dam is a great place to hang out if you like boating and spending time at windy place. That,s the cheapest place to visit in Asansol. :)

Good place for picnic with family and friends. Proper care needs to be taken because there has been a history of accidents. Also families might encounter some inconvenience due to not so public behavior of youngsters in groups. The temple nearby can also be visited.

We visited Maithan this year in January for 2 days with my family. we started on 4th by Black Diamond Express from howrah at 6:15am and reached Maithan at 10:30am. Our hotel was Shatinivas which is 11km from Maithan Station. so we took a local auto to reach there. at the station itself we met our auto driver Jawed (8581838271) who took us to various places in and around Maithan for 2days and became a very good company and guide also during the entire duration of our trip. Getting a good local driver like him actually makes your trip a smooth one. After getting fresh and having lunch in our hotel we started our first day tour at around 1:30pm. Jawed took us first to Dahiwari coal Mine. This was the first time I saw a coal mine and the view was just excellent. next we moved to Panchet dam. the Damodar River on the top of the Dam looks awesome. Jawed showed us the way to reach very near to the lock gate of the dam, and from there we captured a beautiful view of the river.next we visited the Snake Rescue Park where various types of venomous and non-venomous snakes are kept and treated. the experience was good. on returning back we got down Near Maithan dam and from there we took long walk along the damn to enjoy the mystic view of the sunset. by 6pm we got back to hotel. and spent rest of the night in hotel only as you get nothing to do in evening in Maithan.
Next morning after having breakfast we started our journey around 9 am by the auto with our local travel guide cum driver Jawed.first we visited Kalyaneswari Temple which is at the extreme border of Burdwan and Dhanbad district. from there we took the way towards Garh Panchkot which is in Purulia. It took around 40min to reach there from Kalyaneshwari temple. we enjoyed this journey by rod toward Garhpanchkot a lot. the Sceneic beauty of the villages on the way, the fieled of crops on either sides of the road, the natural red soil of the Purulia, the local villagers...everything looked so so awesome. you will just forget the everyday hectic city life and its chaos during this journey. the journey by auto makes the entire thing much more enjoyable as you are open to the nature. on reaching Garh panchkot, we explored the remains of a Rajbari scattered over a vast area on the lap of a Green Hill. (i dont know the history of the Rajbari though). the Debrises have got their own beauty with the view of the hill around. we spent about 45-min here, had some fruit juice, took some snaps and then left for Jaychandi pahar. again another journey along the road of the red soil of Purulia capturing the snaps of the road side fileds of crops. It took about 30mins to reach Jaychandi pahar. we were to climb 480 steps up to the top of the hill to explore the beauty. on the top there is a Temple of Mata Jaychandi. we spent 2 hours on the top of the hill as we could not leave the place without having some more and more views around. it was just too much excellent to observe the horizon from the top. after 2 hours we climb down with a collection of refreshing experience. next Jawed took us back on the same road to show us Baba Birinchi Nath temple, another temple on the top of a small hill covered by the shadow of green trees. such a beautiful and peaceful place to see, you wont feel like breaking the silence of the temple by a single word. there are two small fountains on near the temple. this was the last place to visit on 2nd day. from there we started journey back to hotel and we reach by 6:30 pm.
Next day morning we woke up at 5 am to experience the sun rise from the top of Maithan dam and we gathered and excellent experience too. we didnot plan for any tour that day, as we were to catch train back to Howrah( Jammu-Tawi exprees at 11:04am). But our bad, the train was too late so we had to cancel the ticket . finally we reached Asansol by the cab provided by the hotel (it took 500/-) to take bus bound to Dharmatala, Kolkata.
