“Really enjoyed our time here and in PR”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

We came here on our honeymoon and had a great time, except for some things that had nothing to do with the hotel... more on that later.

The resort is beautiful and the grounds are VERY well-maintained. We had an ocean view room, but it was on the first floor; so while we couldn't see the ocean very well, the view of the resort was very nice. Plush, green, and just plain beautiful. We spent a lot of time on our balcony with drinks, just talking and relaxing.

The rooms aren't overly luxurious, but were clean and very comfortable. We slept great every night we were there and had no problems with the room.

The food was excellent, albeit expensive. We were prepared to spend a good portion of our money on food and drinks. But, it was all REALLY good. The drinks were strong and the restaurants were wonderful. We especially liked the Italian restaurant (went there twice!), and we were really excited to see that the Asian restaurant had a half-price sushi and saki special while we were there. The outside restaurants were fun and laid-back; I just wish that they would stay open a little bit later.

We rented a car for a couple of days to go into old San Juan, El Yunque, and some other excursions. Make sure you rent a car for at least a day or two - you can do this at the resort. While you're out, be sure to stop at a grocery store to get some stuff for making drinks. We liked Ralph's on Hwy 3 (in PR, you can buy beer, wine, and liquor in grocery stores). This saved us TONS of money and made it easy to drink on the balcony.

The casino was pretty small, but we had fun in there. My husband was disappointed that there weren't any poker tables (at least not while we were in there), but the slots were fun and we won on the roulette several times! (Free drinks at the casino was nice too!)

The only bad part of the trip is that I was getting sick as we landed in PR. By our second day, I needed a doctor. The hotel was fantastic with helping us with this - they called a doctor in town to make me an appointment and helped us arrange a taxi to get there and back. So while it was a bummer to be sick on your honeymoon, the hotel really took care of us.

If we ever return to PR, we would definitely stay here again!

Stayed with my son for 5 nights over Spring Break in March. As other said, the ocean view room is only good if you are floor 6 or higher, otherwise you overlook the very busy pool area. I would recommend a mountain view instead. The beach was well maintained but there was a lot of wood chip debris in the waters. We found out we had the breakfast package upon check in which was a nice surprise. $25/per/day value. We had our own car and booked our own day trips and found good restaurants for dinner (Luquillo and Fajardo). The room was just ok. It's very humid in PR so you have to expect the cold air conditioners to keep the humidity down. Bring a sweatshirt for the lobby. My watch went missing after the first day. I'm pretty sure I left it in the room. I filed a report with the security. Overall a good stay and would be fun for large familes with kids and teens. A lot of teens hanging out at night.

Room Tip: Pick a high floor mountain room and you'll have a nice quiet sunset each evening.

lots of reviews about this place have it about right; great location, wonderful grounds, nice public amenities but a bit broken down and in need of improvements. But our stay was excellent, helpful staff, and we were impressively upgraded from lowest price, poor "mountain view" room to wonderful ocean suite with 55 foot long balcony overlooking pool and ocean.

Room Tip: "mountain view rooms on the east wing of the 5th floor are horrible; they overlook the restaura...

The resort is so nice and tropical. I wouldnt say it is a 5 star thats because of the rooms which need an upgrade as well as the bathroom. And the balcony could use a good cleaning. The pool was awesome my kids loved the water slide and we rented a cabana on the beach and that was the best thing to do. The service is great. I had requested a refridgerator and they were all out of them so my husband went to the manager explaining to them we have a baby and need to store her food and formula and they actually took the fridge from the executive officers office to put in our room. Paleo is amazing the food is so good. We only ate at Marbella once for the breakfast buffett I wouldnt recommend that it is expensive and wasnt too good. Room service food is great and so isnt the Seabreeze restaurant next to the pools. The drinks were great especially the mojitos, we actually ate at the Lobby Bar twice they had OK food too. All in all it was a great week. I dont know why there are so many negative reviews. It isnt the Ritz Carlton but you get what you pay for and it was good enough for our family of 5.

Room Tip: Oceanfront Room floor 2 to 7

Spring break for 4 good friends at the Rio Mar Beach Resort was great. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful with all our request. The property is beautiful..... beach view and mountain view all at the same place. Food at the main restaurants was outstanding. Lobby bar was fun with a special drink daily and good bar food. Liked the quiet and peaceful adult pool. I would definitely recommend this for a vacation destination.

Room Tip: Ocean view on third floor or higher.
