“Great Beach and Friendly Staff!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2012

Stayed 3/6/12 - 3/12/12. Private Beach was clean with plenty of chairs and umbrellas. Staff was friendly and helpful. Resort needs some updating but is clean and maintained. Needs more entertainment in the evenings. Overall we loved our stay here!!!

Overall this is a good place to stay. It is near the rain forest and away from all the traffic of San Juan. It has great pools, one for adults only and one for kids. The restaurants in the hotel are good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Be aware that there is a $15/day parking fee.

We were six ladies from New York that needed to relax and get away from the city life. We stayed for 5 days. We had a great time by the pool. We just wanted to get away and to relax on the beach or pool. When we arrived not all of our rooms were ready but the staff was wonderful and sent us to the bar to have a drink by the beach.

We rented a car at the airport and drove all over the area without any problems – we went to the Kiosks almost every night, we also had good steak at the Haciendas (two people order the fish but did not like it), we also went to El Yunque, the rain forest. We forgot to bring water but we did have throwaway raincoats that came in handy. We also drove to Fajardo and then the ferry to Vieques - Sun Bay, we also so made many tips to the local grocery store – Amigo (they have everything fruits, crackers, soda, rum, wine, water, dairy products, and etc.). We went to Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee and a small café down the road from the resort. On our last day we drove to Old San Juan and then off to the airport.

We used the valet parking ($20 per day) with no issues - we called ahead and by the time we arrived downstairs the car was there. All of our rooms were on the Rain-forest side on the 6th floor. The view was beautiful and the sounds of the frogs were nice. Some of the rooms needed some minor painting and patching. All public areas seemed well-kept and everything was clean.

Downside of the resort – Food too expensive, nothing to do at night, very little water pressure in the showers, music by the pool can get very loud, too many guests hogged the beach chairs (the nice wood beach chairs with royal blue cushions’) but did not use them until two to three hours later – staff does nothing to discourage this practice. We never got a chance to sit in the adult quiet side even though we were at the pool by 9 – 10 am every morning.

We visited this resort in Februray 2012 with some family and friends. Upon arriving, the entrance and view was beautiful. We were happy as we had booked this online and had not seen the resort before. I have so many positive things to say about it. The beach was beautiful with surf and sand. Overlooking the beach and poolside was a lively outdoor bar. It was often the hub of acitivity. The only think missing was live music but there was always piped music playing.Drink prices were high but they had a two for one special every day. We all liked the fact that the beach was just a few steps from the pool and bar area so if some of our group wanted to be on the beach and some at the pool, it was easy to get back and forth. The rooms were nice and very clean. The bathroom sparkled. We had a patio with a view of the beautiful grounds, the ocean and the pool. At night, the lights were so pretty. We ate in local restaurants as we wanted to eat Puerto Rican cuisine but the restaurants looked nice although somewhat pricey. All in all, we loved the resort and would highly recommend it. On a side note, if you have not been to Puerto Rico for many years, you should visit. Old San Juan is amazing as it has been restored and included historic buildings, wonderful restaurants, cobblestone streets and little shops. It's a wonderful day or night excursion. We did rent a car as we wanted to see as much as we could.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade on the room so that the patio overlooks the ocean side of the resort.

I booked through Cheap Caribbean for a Mon-Fri stay, early March. Probably because I got such a great deal through CC, they put me and my friend in a room with absolutely no view but we didn't mind. The room and bathroom were a good size and very clean and the beds and especially the pillows were so comfortable.

They told us the resort was at 80% capacity but it seemed like only 50%. We never had trouble getting two lounge chairs by the adult-only pool or the beach. There is supposed to be waiter service by the pool but we only saw a waiter on one day. For food, there are two places by the pool - the Tiki Bar and the Sea Breeze restaurant - neither spectacular. Frozen drinks were great though.

Boleros Lounge, in the hotel, was awesome. I was so impressed by their tapas. And some nights they have a pianist playing. The restaurant next to it, Palio, is also amazing. Worth splurging on a meal there.

Overall, I had a really relaxing vacation at Wyndham Rio Mar. I found what I had read about the place to be true - about the service being slow and the prices a little high - but knowing that going in, I never felt really inconvenienced. I'm glad that my friend and I thought to bring a plethora of snacks to cut back on food costs. And the weather was great and the ocean warm. I would definitely recommend vacationing here if you are looking for an accommodating and relaxing beach getaway and you don't sweat the small stuff.
