We stayed the first 10 nights of July at Calypso Cove #5 and had an outstanding time. If we go back to Grand Cayman we will consider Calypso Cove again.
There were five people in our party, two couples and a 14 year old. The two bed rooms, one with a king and one with two doubles, slept us all comfortably, and the two full baths serviced us just as well. There were plenty of bath towels and beach towels. The full kitchen contained all of the usual small appliances and utensils, and many 'consumable' kitchen items; a few spices and such, presumably left by previous guests. There is a charcoal grill on the back patio. There was a large screen TV in the living area (which we never turned on), and seating for six. The WiFi was not blazingly fast, but was adequate. There was plenty of hot water and the central A/C kept the inside temperature as cool as we wanted.
We spent a number of the evenings on the back patio eating, drinking and visiting. Once the sun is down enough that that area is in the shade, it is plenty cool enough to sit outside comfortably. There were lounge chairs, an umbrella and even a kayak that we carried across the street to the beach. There is an outdoor shower at the north end of the property where we always rinsed off after returning from the beach. The beach is very nice; easy entry and exit into the water with no rocks to navigate. It was rare for there to be five other people on the beach. So if you like a crowd, you probably need to go down to the high rise hotel area on 7 Mile Beach.
Sonya is available 24/7 by phone and couldn't be more accommodating. Each time we talked to her she was able to provide what we needed or tell us what we needed to do. She also provided a washer and dryer; so if you want to pack light, you can do laundry on site.
We cooked in the kitchen a number of times. Alfresco's, Heritage Kitchen and West Bay Diner are restaurants all within walking distance. A large grocery store is a half mile south on West Bay Road.
Calypso Cove is on West Bay Road, which is very busy. At night there is very little traffic; but during the day the traffic noise is such that you can't sit on the front porch and visit. The street noise was not a problem inside or on the back patio. As Calypso Cove is on a blind angle on that road, crossing the road is harrowing at first; until you get used to the cars driving on the left side of the road rather than the right. It took two or three days for us to get the hang of it and then it was not a problem.
You'll want to avoid the public park on the beach to the north of the three story house across the street. There are a number of hobos that hang out there; we'd see them there at 7AM drinking beer and rum. They were very friendly and would talk your ear off, even offering us some of their rum. Only one ever asked us for money. You'll want to go to the beach via the south side of the aforementioned house. We did that and completely avoided the hobos, who seem to like to stay in the shade offered on the north side of that house.
On Saturday nights a group sets up with very loud music in the public park across the street. Sonya told us to call the police when that happens as sleeping would be difficult (she was right). On the second Saturday night we called the police three times. Finally about 1AM the music was turned off.
Here are a few things close to Calypso Cove that we enjoyed doing. It is a quarter mile walk South to Cemetery Beach. I highly recommend spending the day there. It has fantastic snorkeling. We snorkeled twice during the day and once at night (you need a dive light) and saw a manta ray, lobsters, and also two turtles mating. Two and a half miles south is Calico Jack's; a beach bar. Some members of our party would walk/run down the beach to Calico Jack's, and the others drove down. Jack's is on a busy public beach where many come from the cruise ships. Macabuca is a beach bar a mile north of Calypso Cove. It has a very nice area to snorkel.
Can't say enough about Calypso Cove #5. If you want a great get away for a family this is the place. Clean comfortable, 25 yards from beach, good eating close by. Leif and Sonya take great care of guests. When you leave you feel family. Also, Eric will charter his boat for you to have a exclusive charter to the best spots. Going back soon and can't wait!
We absolutely loved our stay and would go back again! The beach is literally just a few steps across the street. Most days there was hardly another person on the beach besides us. You can see the water from the front porch which is where we spent most mornings and evenings. Snorkeling was very good, the water is beyond crystal clear and you can easily swim way out without worrying about a strong current. There is a drop off into the water which made it hard for my parents (traveling w/ us) to get in/out of the water due to their age but for us, it was totally fine. The condo sits on the main road in/out of West Bay so morning/evening "rush hour" was full of cars but it quiets down the rest of the times. The condo itself is plenty spacious enough for 2 couples. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking as we did alot of that to save money. The keuriq was a nice touch as well. Tons of beach towels, beach chairs, an umbrella, even a pool noodle. There's a shared gas grill that we used and a charcoal one if you prefer that. We used the brita water pitcher and that made the tap water perfectly fine to drink. There are tvs in both bedrooms and a large one in the living room with a dvd player but we didn't go to the Caymans to watch tv. Personally I would be happy with no tv, but that's just me. lol. The wifi was a nice perk and worked well.
Everything worked well in the condo, water pressure is good in the showers, plenty of hot water, a/c was cold, just all around comforts of home.
The hosts, Sonja and Leif are terrific. Sonja was there every day to answer questions and give advice. I can't say enough about their hospitality.
There are plenty of things within walking distance if you don't have a car (we had a rental car). Al Fresco restaurant is across the street, on the beach and visible from the front porch. Food was excellent, it's open air and perfect to watch the sunsets. West Bay diner is a few steps further, serves breakfast all day long with lunch and dinner. Our food was excellent. Heritage Kitchen is a few steps further but had just closed on the night we decided to try it. Fosters IGA grocery store is also walking distance if you don't buy too much. Then there's Cemetary beach which is incredible for snorkeling, the beach area is flatter and slightly less of a drop off. We walked there in about 15 minutes depending on your walk speed.
The main area of Seven Mile Beach is about a 5-10 min drive depending on time of day. We loved staying away from the tourist area. This condo is in West Bay which is where all the locals live, and yes, everyone is super friendly here. Locals will say hi to you no matter where you are.
The only slight challenge for my parents was the condo is 2 levels. You walk up 3 steps to the ktichen from the main level and same thing for the master bedroom, 3 steps up to the master bath. For us, it was a non issue, but my parents have problems with their knees so it was a bit tough at times. For them, they might have preferred all one level but this is no reflection on the condo itself, just a fact.
We loved staying here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay away from the main tourist area. The beach is incredible, nearly private most of the time yet you're close to everything if you have a car. There's a local bus that stops right out front as well but we didn't use that.
My family of 4, spouse and 2 teens, spent a week in the apartment. It was better than the photos - very spacious and clean. The kitchen was fully stocked even has a Keurig coffee maker! A grill is on the back deck and the previous renters left lighter fluid so it was a quick trip to grocery to pick up charcoal. The beach is just a 2 minute walk, just across the road. Plenty of towels, beach chairs, and many beach towels. I was happily surprised at all the towels. A pool float along with a few pool noodles (we bought and left) are there also. This was our third visit to the island previously staying at Marriott and Sunshine Suites but Calypso Cove will be our choice of accommodations for future visits.

We thoroughly enjoyed out stay at Calypso Cove. The hospitality we experienced was
outstanding, and the apartment offered everything we could have wanted, including more
beach towels than we could possibly have used!
We had a private porch on the front, and a shared porch on the back. We used the back
porch the most, and enjoyed the company of some great neighbors (as well as our hosts)
throughout our visit.
One of us is a diver, the other is not.
For the diver, access to the public beach, dock and dive boats was in very easy walking
distance, across the street and one block up.
For the non-diver, Calypso Cove’s private beach is wonderful! It has both sun and trees for
shade with no competition for the spot one wants. We never shared the beach with more than
two other people.
About three blocks away is a Supermarket. There is also an excellent, reasonably priced restaurant with oceanside dining across the street.
We could highly recommend considering Calypso Cove for your vacation!
