It is rare for us to be so enchanted with a place that all we want to do is an about turn and go straight back to its calm and serenity. The Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is such a place. The warmth of the welcome is sincere and we were made to feel special throughout our stay. The staff are simply charming.

Having arrived on the BA overnight red-eye (and waited over 90 minutes for our luggage to appear), the drive up was an eye-opener full of WOW’s as the scenery became more & more spectacular and it was a relief to head straight to the Spa for an excellent couples Hammam & massage then sink into the comfortable bed. Check in was seamless and our bags in our room before us. Our premier canyon view room (no. 146) was always immaculate and I loved the attention to detail: lots of tissues, bottled water always available, lovely toiletries, bathrobes & slippers, a spacious dressing area and large bathroom, and lots of information & books on the area and its people.

It is a very relaxing and relaxed environment and we found it easy to chat to other guests although the place appears uncrowded even when you know they are at full capacity. There were plenty of places at the pool and service of towels & iced water immediate. The food is of a very high standard and we loved the buffets on offer, also enjoying the Al Qalaa Arabian grill although our waistlines are now complaining….. minor quibble: milk comes with English Breakfast tea and not after when the tea is cold ☺

The setting and the changing view in daylight hours is totally absorbing and the elegant architecture of the building based on the Omani forts we visited seems to merge with the landscape. This was obvious when we took the Three Village Culture Walk and could hardly differentiate it in the distance. The walk itself was fascinating passing through abandoned villages and the odd terrace still being cultivated and hacked out of the side of the mountain all watered by the ancient falaj irrigation system. The scent of an Omani rose is deeply powerful! The planting in the interior grounds of the hotel is most interesting and we were not the only ones who stopped to admire it. Note to management: to produce a leaflet to put in the rooms which lists ALL the plants (not the odd sign) and the layout – what was that gorgeous purple-headed wispy grass clump?

However the one deep memory we will retain of this trip was our Fascinating Forts day tour to the old capital city of Niswa with its goat market and souk, Niswa Fort, Bahla Fort and Jabreen Castle all brought to life by the wonderful M Suleiman, a distinguished, knowledgeable and interested gentleman with perfect spoken English. We learnt so much from him and I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. I should mention that the Recreation Centre was most responsive to our questions on activities prior to arrival. Request from my husband: could you keep a couple of left-handed bows please for your archery?

So from two fairly “picky” travellers, a strong recommendation that this hotel should be a MUST on your list. Thank you Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar for a very special stay. We will be back. I have provided quite a number of photos as I think it worthwhile showing the beauty of the place.

Room Tip: Canyon View rooms are great

My wife and I chose this hotel to stay at for 5 nights for my wife's 50th birthday. We chose a deal with a UK airline that offered half board with a Premier Canyon View room. We also decided to hire a 4x4 from Muscat airport. The price for the hire car was the same cost as the hotel limo service, but at least we had the freedom of our own car for our entire 7 days in Oman.
I have read some of the negative comments left by other reviewers so i'll attempt to give my perspective on some of them.
If driving up from Muscat on your own, for a tourist, the drive is pleasant and interesting and the scenery is beautiful. The journey up the mountain is amazing and I don't consider it to be scary at all! Make sure you have the rental car registration documents, (Not your rental agreement), this should be in your glove compartment of your rental car so check before you leave! You will also need your driving license.
The hotel is just beautiful, and has everything you could need, with stunning gardens. They offer loads of activities and also free yoga twice a week at 0730 in the morning. Doing yoga on Diana's point with the back-drop of the mountains should be on everyone's bucket-list even if you haven't done yoga before like me!
The pool area is great. We didn't have a problem finding sun lounges at all, but it can get busy, but still quite peaceful.
It has a good gym and offers free use of bicycles if using around the hotel complex!
We had a premier canyon view room, which was amazing. For a standard room, they are quite special with unrivalled views. However, my only observation/ criticism of our entire stay is that the because the rooms are quite large, the acoustics mean that If the residents of the next room aren't quiet or the cleaners are cleaning then you can hear a lot through the walls. We had a child crying in the next room for 2 days and it was really frustrating and affected our sleep.
The service we experienced was simply the best we have ever come across. The staff just couldn't do enough for you. What made it so good was that they aren't in your face all the time, but they are very good at observing from a distance and then jumping in to help if you needed it, even if they were simply passing on another job. You certainly didn't get a 'It's not my department but so-and-so might help you' here. My wife and I also observed that there is a genuine positive atmosphere between the staff. They all seem to get on and interact really well with each other. This is commendable, given the quite diverse ethnicity of all the staff and this positive atmosphere really shows.
We stayed on half board whilst here and I would really recommend this if you can get it. There a 3 restaurants - a buffet with a diverse menu, an Arabic and a Mediterranean/ Italian. On half board, you can eat anywhere. Some dishes have supplements to pay, but there is still a wide choice. I have to say that the food was very good. However, if you are paying for your food each night, then this is likely to add up significantly over a few days. I don't think the prices are unreasonable, but you will naturally be more picky and critical if you are paying each night and you don't get what you think you were expecting. I had absolutely no complaints over the food; portions were reasonable sizes and the quality was very good. I think you are kinda bound to the hotel as the town isn't exactly a tourist town despite the hotel being there. We drove around the town and couldn't even find a normal supermarket and didn't spot any decent restaurants (Apart from 1 maybe next to the hotel?). Personally, I found the hotel offered more than enough choice and we were there for 5 days and didn't eat the same thing twice.
Drink isn't cheap, however nor should you expect it to be from an Anantara! The bar does do a happy (2) hour(s) where some drinks are 50% off. Wine was Very expensive. The wine list had some UK supermarkets wines that retail at £10-12, selling at upwards of £60 here; though this is probably because importing such wine into Oman is probably quite expensive anyway. Overall, I found the price of alcohol in line with what I was expecting to pay.
Mosquitos - we visited in Mar/ Apr - found 1 and killed it.
Overall, this was place was fantastic and quite simply the best hotel we have ever stayed in, and my wife and I do a lot of travelling. It is designed for you to get away from the 'rat-race', chill-out, relax with the most beautiful views imaginable and let the team do everything they can for you. They offer you enough activity to pick from if you don't want to lie next to the pool all the time. Someone wrote in a review that they felt miserable and trapped up here. Really?! They clearly didn't do their research before booking!
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough and Mr Darwin and his senior managers are always visible and on hand to help, which was great. If you can, try and get half board, it takes the stress out of deciding what/ where to eat. Thanks to all the team for making our stay so memorable.

This is a beautiful hotel in a spectacular setting. Our initial impressions on arrival were good. We especially liked the greeting and check in process and we loved the room with the spectacular view of the canyon. We would recommend block B or C for the views and being quieter as away from the pool and Italian restaurant. Another positive is the staff, the majority offer outstanding service and will go out of their way to make sure your stay is a pleasant one.
The facilities are good with a nice pool area which was never busy during our stay. A word of warning, it can sometimes be a bit windy but then you are up a mountain! The recreation staff are great, offering plenty of different activities. The 3 village walk is excellent although, be warned, wear sensible footwear as there are some tricky descents down slippery rocks – it is not all footpaths.
The Arabic restaurant Al Qalaa is excellent both in terms of food and service. For lunch, Bella Vista is very good and the coffee shop, Al Baha, has some good items on the menu as well.
Now for the negatives and why we say it is not 5 star. We were staying 7 nights rather than just two or three nights, as the majority of people seem to, so perhaps we noticed things that others would have dismissed as a one-off. Service in Al Maisan was inconsistent to say the least. At breakfast we had to ask for coffee more than once on several mornings and dirty plates were often not cleared away both at breakfast and dinner. Service at dinner on the Friday was nothing less than shambolic, more 3 star all-inclusive rather than 5 star resort. We are happy to report that things improved dramatically towards the end of our stay following the restaurant manager’s return from vacation. We cannot speak too highly of him. He sought us out and continued to check with us to ensure we were happy. For information there are a couple of restaurants near the hotel if you wish to eat elsewhere.
However, our main issue was with housekeeping. We had to contact Guest Services on more than one occasion regarding our room not being cleaned properly. The accumulation of dust on the floor was more than just a couple of days’ worth and is not something we have experienced in any other accommodation. Problems are rectified with apologies but the point is these issues should not be occurring in the first place.
There are many positives to the hotel and we enjoyed our stay. However, we noticed a few basic issues that fell short of expectations which is why we do not feel we can give 5 stars for our experience.

Having seen the BBC 2 programme about this Hotel shortly before we left the UK we expected so much but found less. The location is good and the rooms all the way 5* but we think Anantara have some problems to address some of which are soluble and others not.

Before passing on to these points I did find the architecture rather brutal and four square - it may mellow with time and as the extensive planting takes effect. The area it is set in is not very attractive and they cannot help the noise of construction that starts around 07.30 and features pneumatic hammers - that will pass.

The areas where they need to raise their game are the restaurants each of which I have reviewed. Then the time it takes from check-in for one's bags to reach the room. Check-in is quite elaborate with a nice welcome drink, towel and usual processes but still our bags were after us to "E Block" as our wing was called. The bar does work very well because of the circular shape and elaborate light in the centre. There is no atmosphere and prices are steep BUT do ask because there is a very unpublicised happy hour with half prices that I recall starts at 18.00 - here every bit really does help!!

The biggest problem is the pool area. The pool is too small and too shallow; the surrounds are so small you are right on top of others. The loungers have no covers and are going to age with sun creams to something quite nasty. The whole experience is very non 5*. Did they hope for far more local guests who would not be seen in bikinis etc? Well it was near Easter and jam packed. Very bad design planning error.

I hope this place thrives but I fear it may have to discount too much to keep full. Would not want to go back despite the great drive up which I enjoyed doing a few times. You are nearly an hour from Nizwa but Birkat al Mauz at the bottom of the hill is very well worth visiting.
