“Superb Flight and Service”
Review of United Airlines

Reviewed 3 weeks ago via mobile

We had read some negative comments about United so we weren’t sure what to expect to be honest. It started with the business class lounge at Heathrow T2 which was just superb, very clean, great food and excellent service. Easy priority boarding which was smooth and faultless. We flew on a 767-300 in the old style 2-2-2 configuration but the seat was comfortable, roomy if not a tad old, I am 6 foot 2 inches tall and over 20 stone but had loads of room. The food and the service was first class and our Rod, the purser was just superb. We would definitely fly with United again, well done.

We were headed to Chicago (ORD) for a symposium and flying out of our home airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), on UA523, in 2 E&F on an A-320 (#4643) on Sunday, Nov 12.

On this Sunday, the TSA Security lines (even for Pre-Check) were longer, than normal, and T2 at PHX was very crowded. We headed to the United Club, near Gate 7, and as our flight was out at 11:30am, started with Champagne, two “splits” of the Moët et Chandon Brut Champagne, and cheese and crackers.

Our in-bound plane arrived early, so we headed down to Gate 3, before our scheduled boarding time. Though the plane was at the gate early, we did not begin boarding until right at 10:59. Because of our status, we get to board before Group 1, so were situated in our seats, about the time that the main boarding began.

We settled in, and ordered the Tiamo Prosecco for our pre-departure beverage.

As this was a 3:24hr flight, we also got warmed nuts, and Lunch:
Salad - quite good
Pretzel Bread
Shrimp Jambalaya (with Chicken Sausage) - also quite good [Me]
Grilled Chicken Salad - not quite so good [Wife]
Chocolate Cheesecake - fair

We did the Santa Julia Mendoza, Argentina Chardonnay ‘14, which we have had on many recent flights, and it is OK, but nothing exciting.

Our A-320 had the updated FC seats, which provide comfort and legroom, even when the seat in front is reclined, as the seat slides forward, and intrudes less on the passenger behind it. These seats also have good AC/USB/Audio Out connections on the podium. We have come to like these newer seats on Domestic flights. Along with the new seats, the refurbished A-320's have improved overhead bin storage space, at least in FC. In FC, the seating is configured as 2-2, where it is 3-3 in E/E+, plus the seats there are of the slimline variety, with thin cushions – a lot of difference between the two cabins. The new FC seats also have an armrest (on aisle seats), which flips up, allowing one to access the seat, even with the tray table in place – nice touch. There are several storage bins around the seat, but those cannot be used during takeoff and landing.

This ship had PDE (Personal Device Entertainment) with streaming content via the UA App (must have the latest version downloaded, and installed, before the doors close), which is free. It also had WiFi (for a fee), but we did not use that. The PDE was good, and worked well for the entire flight. The new seats have a tablet stand, built into the tray table, which is useful.

Our captain came out and gave us a rundown of the flight, with a bit of humor thrown in. Nice, friendly touch, and we are seeing a bit more of that on UA. Our cabin crew was excellent, as had been the UA Gate Agents at PHX.

We arrived at ORD on-time, and our luggage was on the carousel quickly. I wish that I could say the same for our towncar driver, but that is another story... Very good flight, and much better than the one we had taken 3 weeks ago to ORD. Then, our SFO-bound flight from PHX was cancelled, and to connect to London, UA rushed us onto the Chicago flight, which was about to close. We managed to get the last two seats, but they were way back in E. Let’s just say that on the UA A-320's, there is a lot of difference between the front of the plane, and the back.

After a very short business stay in San Francisco, we headed back home to Phoenix on Tuesday, Nov 07, on UA1501, flying a 737-800 SFP V2 (#3537) in FC, Row 2 E&F. This plane had come in from MEX, and we were flying out of the International Terminal, G93. While not unheard of (last year we flew Domestic SFO-PHX out of International G Gates maybe 5 times), it’s not common for this flight to depart from the G Gates in International. Since we were just out of T3 at SFO, we stopped into the AMEX Centurion Club for a bite to eat, and some wine, since we were not getting home until 10:33pm.

We made our way to our gate, just before boarding commenced, and with our status, boarded just before Group 1. We were in our seats, jackets hung in the closet, by the time that Group 1 arrived. We were ready for our pre-departure drink, and went with a red and a white wine, which turned out to be the UMA (Cabernet Sauvignon) and the Santa Julia (Chardonnay), both from the Mendoza Region of Argentina. As the plane had just come in from MEX, so an International flight, I had hoped for different wines, but these were fine – just wines, that we have had many times on UA flights.

We departed on-time, for the short (1:35 hrs) flight to PHX, and finally to home. We had done this trip to San Francisco, only two days after arriving home from a 16 day international trip, so we were ready for our own bed.

During the flight, we stayed with those two wines, and grabbed a bag of chips, from the passed snack basket.

This plane had the PDE (Personal Device Entertainment) system, which worked well. The PDE is free, via the UA App (latest version is required, and must be downloaded, and installed before the doors close), and WiFi (for a fee), which we did not use, as we had done all necessary work in the AMEX Club in T3.

Other than some rough spots, around PHX, the flight was uneventful. The plane was clean, and everything functioned. Our cabin crew was excellent, as had been the staff at Gate G93. About as nice as our flight from PHX to SFO, the day before.

Where do I start! Absolutely shocking! Found out after take off that there is no entertainment for economy passengers, 8 hour flight, watched the lion king which everyone had to watch then after that Sat and had to watch the flight map for the remainder of the flight, the aircraft is out dated! Next time I'll pay to fly with a real airline like BA or Virgin, can't believe how poor united airlines is!
