Not beating around the bush, the service was the worst I experienced anywhere in the world. Pilots appear to be well qualified with perfect landings.

We tend to use major international airlines but we got a good deal on SAA so we thought we would give it a go. Ground service was excellent, particularly at OR Tambo when we changed planes. The surprising thing was the amount of legroom on the plane, almost too much, to reach the pocket in the back of the seat in front you had to unbuckle and stand up! The downside of this is that you had no table in front of you and no seat back entertainment, these were stashed in the armrests so the seats were narrower than most business class seats. This in turn meant there was very little space to turn when the seat was in flat bed mode. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was standard business class fare, not exciting but edible

We flew via Ghana - which delayed the flight as the security staff were arguing about who was supposed to be doing what. So sad to see how SAA has deteriorated over the past few years. It used to be an amazing experience. Now in economy the legroom is so small. The service is terrible. Bells were ringing and left unanswered. Staff very friendly, but not very helpful. Everything was cheap and nasty about the meal - the gluten free option was dismal. Take some back up or youll be hungry unless you like dry rice cakes.

I am not one to ever say a bad word about anything, but after my flight to Joburg from Munich, we all left disappointed. There was about 10 of us flying, all in the same area of the aircraft and 5 of our TV's weren't working, all calling the attendants, they all said the same story, to reboot the system and thats what they did, but the same problem occurred, mine was the sound, others were flashing picture. Anyway thats not a massive problem but they need to sort out those entertainment systems as people rely on them! Also a small one, in the morning we woke up to no water, they offered us soda water which i just cannot do at 5am! I asked the attendant to ask the other attendants if they had water but he seemed pretty not interested in getting it.
Hate to be a pest but that was my experience.

SAA was once the crown jewel of African airline brands...flight attendants are generally helpful, but as with most airlines you will run into individuals "having a bad day"...DO NOT PUT VALUABLES IN YOUR CHECKED LUGGAGE. these luggage items can and are often opened, and small items are often stolen or tampered with. things like gifts, chocolates, spirits, expensive cologne/perfume. use your discretion.
