It was a 16 year-old A330, with a pretty small (by modern standards) seat pitch (perhaps inherited from Jetstar where the plane served for six years until 2015) and iPad-based entertainment system.
The first shock was the authoritarian and bossy attitude of the cabin crew, which was in a stark contrast with the calm and polite behaviour of the flight attendants from the Asian airlines that we flew with on the same day. I am not sure we needed it after a lengthy wait in the boarding zone (as the flight was delayed) where we had to seat on the floor due to the lack of space.
It was a night flight. Somehow the temperature in the cabin was kept at an unacceptably low level. People put on their jackets (particularly lucky ones had hoods on them that were very handy), some covered with a couple of blankets. It was all the more bad since we were coming from a tropical country, it was quite hot in Singapore. The cabin crew was apparently oblivious of the very uncomfortable for the passengers environment and did nothing. And we noticed that they had rest under much thicker blankets that the economy passengers had access to.
I missed the first meal, trying to get some sleep, but had a hot breakfast as it was so cold. It was a pretty substandard meal: scrambled egg with some upsetting bacon and beans, like it was from a can. Started regretting that I ate it an hour later. The coffee was luke-warm — cannot recall ever having such a cold hot drink on an airplane. The orange juice hardly deserved to be called that way.
I have been a loyal Qantas customer for thirty years. I truly regret to see what happened to it.
