“Richmond to Chicago direct, the way to go”
Review of American Airlines

Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We drive a bit further to fly out of Richmond but the airport is right sized. American airlines, my preferred carrier has waxed and waned over the last several years but sometimes they are just right on. Great crew, spirited and with a sense of joy. Flight was on time and luggage pickup was very efficient.

This flight departs from Tokyo Narita and ends at Dallas/Ft. Worth. I had a connecting flight to Atlanta on AA 2072.

Boarding at the gate was called by Group numbers and was quite orderly. I paid $75 one way for Main Cabin Extra that gets you a few inches more legroom. My seat was by the emergency exit so legroom not an issue. Beverage/meal carts brushed by my elbow as they make a turn to pass through the narrow gap to the cabin in front.

Flight time was just under 13 hrs that day - winds not so favorable. Departure scheduled at 6:45pm. Push back was about 10 minutes late. At that time of day, NRT is busy so taxi time to runway was about 30mins. Once we reached cruise altitude, FAs came by with hot paper towels which were rather dry, followed by beverage service. Dinner was served and was average; nothing memorable, but nothing terrible.

Extensive choice of movies, BBC news and TV shows. Enough to keep you occupied before falling asleep. Mid flight snack box containing ham & cheese sandwich, mini Kit Kat bar and 3 grapes was handed out followed by beverage service. This occurs when flying by Alaska near Anchorage, so if you are waiting for the snack, look at the flight path map. If you are asleep, they won't wake you up.

Breakfast served 90 minutes prior to landing at DFW. Don't expect anything fancy in Economy. Again, nothing memorable, and it won't kill you.

Cabin crew was efficient and overall pleasant. Each crew member has their own personality; some were cheerful, others not. I suspect one of them wasn't feeling so well. It's hard not to pick up some virus when locked in an Aluminum tube with some 250+ people. For seating layout, see B777-200 V2 on seatguru.com.

Overall, good flight. Nothing much to complain about. Clearing immigration at DFW was chaotic that day with several international flights arriving about the same time. Took about 90 minutes from disembarking to picking up luggage at carousel. Made it just in time to connecting flight for Atlanta, only to find that it was delayed 20+ mins.

My upgrade to F came through and I was glad. Light meal served and I'm thankful as there wasn't time for me to get a meal in the Terminals.

Just before takeoff, DFW airport closed for about 30 mins due to passing thunderstorm. Took off after storm passing and flight was smooth. Just a very long day. Arrived ATL just before midnight. Had room booked at Airport hotel.

Let’s face it, flying is not enjoyable unless you can afford to fly first class of which I never do. What I like about AA is the leg room and the boarding process. I’m not a big guy at all, but the claustrophobia of the seat density of other airlines is borderline torture. AA seems to do it right and that was my feeling with this last trip. Food: forget it, but I didn’t expect anything so it was as expected. I’d fly AA again for sure.

Friendly crew with an outstanding attitude. One attendant was harassed by a boarding passenger to the extent that other already seated passengers came to his defense. He remained professional and friendly in spite of the rude encounter. Kudos!!

Friendly crew, on time flight that actually arrived a few minutes early. I like the night time lighting effect to help encourage sleep even though the flight was entirely daylight. Helps transition the time changes.
