Family Holiday in Noja & visit to Bilbao

Hello,

We are travelling to Noja in May for a week (staying at playa Joyel), we will be taking a 2 year old & 4 year old, so much of our time will be spent around the beaches exploring etc (assuming the weather is ok)

But we also want to venture into Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim. We have been told driving into Bilbao is a nightmare, so wondered about possibly getting a train if there is a station near Noja?

Also where else in Bilbao may be worth visiting & child friendly?

Any other ideas, suggestions and advice much appreciated.

Thank you

There's no train station in Noja, your nearest place to get the rather slow FEVE train to Bilbao is Gama or Beranga, both about 5 minutes drive from Noja. There are 3 trains a day each way. 11.90€ return. It takes you right to the centre of Bilbao, next to the old town, and from there you can get a tram round to the Guggenheim easily. For train info: http://www.renfe.com/viajeros/feve/index.html

Your other option is the bus, with ALSA www.alsa.es, although there are no buses direct from Noja to Bilbao that I can see, you might have to get to Gama or Beranga again I think, or go first by bus to Laredo, there are 8 a day, and change there for Bilbao. The Laredo bus will also take you to Gama to connect with the train to Bilbao, although that makes it quite a long journey.

This website is also useful for public transport in Cantabria: www.transportecantabria.es

As for what to do in Bilbao with kids, you're best posting on the Bilbao forum and asking there, you'll get a more varied response than here.

Hope that's helpful!

Hi.

We recently stayed in Noja and visited Bilbao for the day. We drove in to the city and had no problems, there were ample parking places around the museum, we did have a sat nav so navigating in and out was ok. Our children are 7 and 5 and both enjoyed looking at the sculptures outside the museum. There is also a large playground located next to the museum which was clean and had lots of swings and slides for all ages.

We found that playa Trengadin was the nicest beach, it was very clean and is huge so lots of space for the children to run round.

Another great family day out was the Parque de Cabárceno zoo, it;s a 35min drive towards Santander. The adult prices were a little expensive at 24 euros each but children 6 and under are free.

Hope you have a great holiday.

Thank you very much for replying. Very useful & also reassuring to know that getting into Bilbao isn't difficult at all (we will also be using a sat nav) Great to know there is a playground near the museum, we can use this to tempt them away from the beach.

And we will definitely try the zoo too.

Thank you again.

A tip for Cabarceno (a must see with kids), go during the week, not at the weekend, especially if the weather's good, and time your visit to conicide with the seal/sealion show (1pm and 5pm) and if your kids are not too nervous, the birds of prey show (they fly very low, which scares some kids) (12pm and 4pm). You'll need a car for this.
