Driving to Acireale

Hi All

We are hoping to go to Sicily in 2-3weeks time (2 adults and 2 teenagers). It's very last minute which I know is not ideal. It looks like the only hotel we can get (with a pool) is Hotel Orrizante in Acireale for which we'll need a car. I've read various horror stories about driving and realise the main issues are places like Catania and Palermo. What is the drive from Catania airport to Acireale like? Does it go enough around the outside of the town or would we be better off hiring a car in Acireale instead though that will then require us to get airport transfers etc?

Any advice gratefully received.

Hire the car at the airport in Catania Hagrats123.

You'll avoid driving in Catania, take autostrada, and arrive at your hotel in half an hour.

Thank you I wasn't sure how close the autostrada went to the town. That's reassuring.

Prego Hagrats123,

That hotel is north near Santa Tecla.

Thank you that's useful to know as I'd realised it wasn't in the centre but beyond that didn't know more.

Do you have any idea what the parking is like in Acireale as I imagine we will be going there frequently? I know the station has free parking but I think you've mentioned to others that that is a bit out of town. Are there any recommended car parks or will it be street parking?

Thanks

Acireale is a local town, and you should find street parking acceptable.

If you can even find the town, very few signs and old town invisible! We gave up trying to find it! Alternative little fishing harbour discovered in the process which was very nice! Driving in Sicily is a nightmare even with a sat nav.

As has been indicated many times on these forums, GPS isn't always reliable in Sicily.

Use a paper map along with GPS or downloaded maps, and plan your routes in advance.

Acireale isn't challenging to find.
