Yosemite without a car?

We are planning a visit to California next year, we are going to San Francisco and would like to spend a few days in Yosemite, we didn't want to hire a car but are unsure if it possible to visit without one ?

There are two main options for travel to Yosemite without a car.

-- Amtrak. One ticket will put you on an Amtrak bus, Amtrak train to Merced, and YARTS bus from Merced to Yosemite Valley.

-- Tour companies from San Francisco have 1-3 day tours to Yosemite. This is either a van or a bus, and usually includes lodging. You might be able to arrange just transportation. Most don't do any touring with you once you're in the Park, but some do. Extranomical and IncredibleAdventures are the most commonly mentioned.

Once you're in the Valley, you can use the free shuttle to get around the Valley floor. A car is a hindrance here.

But the rest of the Park is harder to access without a car. In summer, there is a fee tour that includes Glacier Point & Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias and a fee bus to Tuolumne Meadows. Some folks just take a bus to Glacier Point and walk down Panorama Trail.

It is easiest to stay in the Valley, but it's harder to find lodging and it cost more. (REad Top Q in upper right.) You can stay on Hwy 140 on the YARTS bus route in a less expensive place, but you won't be staying IN the Park and you have to take the bus in & out each day.

Your prior posts indicate you will be traveling with two children, 6 and 8.

In that case, renting a car and driving makes far more sense - time-wise and fare-wise. You should also make reservations for accomodations as soon as you have dates.

If you really don't want to drive, then I would take a tour.

I am visting san fran for 4 days from 11 oct 11. now thinking a trip to yosemite is a must. would you recommend a long 14 hr day on a bus tour or would u think we would get more out of using public transport - stay at say curry village and make our way back the next day. we dont want to hire a car. 2 adults. Thinking we may be able to leave luggage at san fran hotel and travel light.

You will get more answers to your specific question if you start your own thread rather than piggybacking on carly's. You will also not be confusing the responders who may confuse your thread with carlys.
