Yosemite from San Francisco

We have reservations in Yosemite in late September. We are driving in from San Francisco a day early. We need somewhere to stay preferably close to Yosemite that first night. Would like a scenic drive and a stop where there are things to do. Then will drive into Yosemite first thing the next morning Thank you for any input

Hi

There are four entrances to Yosemite that will be open in September. Depending on your interests, maybe it would make sense to drive to the California Gold Rush Country and enjoy some historic Hwy 49 tourism on your first day. Then you'd enter via Hwy 120 / Big Oak Flat.

Or maybe you want to be close to Mariposa Grove and stay in Fish Camp or Oakhurst, then using Hwy 41 / South Entrance for your entry day. Or if you don't have much time for Yosemite tourism, perhaps you visit Mariposa Grove in the late afternoon after you drive from SF, then begin your full Yosemite tourism day with another area of Yosemite.

The drive from SF to Yosemite is generally not all that scenic. You cross the agricultural San Joaquin Valley. The scenery is in the mountains.

What kinds of things do you like to do? Again, the best 'things to do' are in SF and in Yosemite. I *think* this sounds like Hwy 49, but it's tough to guess as you haven't given any clues.

Where are you driving to when you leave Yosemite? If south toward Sequoia National Park or LA, could you change your Yosemite dates to arrive in the Valley a day early, then stay at Big Trees Lodge on the last night? Otherwise, spending that first night in Gold Country would be great.
