Best stop between San Jose and Tenaya Lodge

Hello,

My family will be arriving in San Jose around 4:30 pm. We are thinking of driving toward Yosemite that evening and looking for a place to stop overnight before we head to Tenaya Lodge the next day. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you!

Cathy

On a weekday traffic could be rough--

Gilroy

Casa de Fruta

Santa Nella? Los Banos?

Don't go to Tenaya Lodge on the morning of Day 2. Drive into Yosemite Valley and begin your tourism. Go to the Tenaya Lodge in Fish Camp at the end of the day. There are tourism ideas in the Top Questions on the right.

Los Banos was my first thought for your overnight.

I’d vote for Casa de Fruta because I like it. It’s about 50 miles from San Jose, and travel time will depend a lot on commute traffic. Yes, the San Jose to Gilroy corridor can get ugly on a weekday afternoon. BTW, it has a Hollister address because it has a P.O. box there, but you aren’t actually going down to Hollister; it is on 152, right on your way.

This is an experience, not *just* a motel, so if you want *just* a motel, the next choice is 25 miles farther east on 152, a Motel 6 at the same exit with the Petro Travel Plaza and KOA. If you reach the I-5 interchange, you’ve passed it. (You won’t take I-5 at all, but 99 south).

Thank you! I did plan on going to Yosemite Valley before Tenaya. We have a tour through the hotel on day 3. Should I get a walker's day pass or a car pass to get into the valley for the other two days?

You will need to pay to drive into the National Park. One fee is good for seven days. Your lodging is about 5 minute drive from the South Entrance, then it's another hour to drive to Yosemite Valley.

I would stay at Casa de Fruta over Los Banos! 😎

I wouldn't stop at all. It is 3 hours from SJC to Tenaya. Have dinner in San Jose before you leave to let traffic die down, then drive straight to the hotel.
