Need help planning 6 night / 7 days trip to yellow stone

I have planning to visit Yellow Stone between May 24th and May 30th, but not exactly sure how to plan days and how to reach the place? Is driving from Salt Lake city good advise or directly goto Jackson Hall? We have 6 year old girl not sure if she will like it or not and if any kids special activities we should consider?

Just to be clear, Jackson is a wonderful place to stay ....to tour Grand Tetons. It is not wonderful for seeing Yellowstone. It is about a 3 hour drive from Jackson to Old Faithful or the Canyon area, so you would spend 6 hours a day *commuting*. Flying in to SLC is fine as well, but you will have a 5 to 6 hour drive to get to Yellowstone or Jackson.

There are tours that leave from both West Yellowstone or Mammoth/Gardiner area. It is pretty easy to drive yourselves as well. Are you going to rent a car? Yellowstone is not a good park to see while trying to rely on other transportation. Often the tours will cover the Upper Loop or the Lower Loop, which in my estimation does not give enough time to actually see the sights. If you do a tour, you might want to go back to see the thermal and canyon areas on your own when you will have time to appreciate the scene.

Denalicat listed some excellent kid-focused activities in her post #1.

What you might consider:

May 24 Fly in to Bozeman. Rent car. Pick up supplies for lunches, snacks and a cooler at WalMart in Bozeman. Drive to Gardiner or Mammoth for overnight.

May 25 Stay overnight in Gardiner or Mammoth

May 26 Drive south to the Tetons and stay overnight in Jackson

May 27 Stay overnight in West Yellowstone or Old Faithful

May 28 Stay overnight in West Yellowstone or Old Faithful

May 29 Stay overnight in West Yellowstone or Old Faithful. If your flight home is in the morning you might need to stay this night in Bozeman.

May 30 Fly home from Bozeman

or another plan:

May 24 Fly in to Jackson. Stop and do some grocery shopping for lunches and buy a cooler.

May 25 West Yellowstone or Old Faithful

May 26 West Yellowstone or Old Faithful

May 27 Gardiner or Mammoth

May 28 Gardiner or Mammoth

May 29 Return to Grand Tetons and overnight in Jackson

May 30 Fly home from Jackson

or another plan

May 24 Fly in to Bozeman, shop, buy a cooler, drive to Gardiner or Mammoth for overnight

May 25 Overnight Gardiner or Mammoth

May 26 Overnight Old Faithful

May 27 Overnight Old Faithful

May 28 Overnight Jackson

May 29 Overnight Jackson

May 30 Fly home from Jackson

Flying in to one city and departing from another city is called *open jaw*flights. To check prices on them, check the tab on your airline website that says *multi-city*.

I did not make an itinerary for you flying in to SLC. If you do, you will have that 5 or 6 hour drive on the day you land, unless it is late afternoon or evening and you would need to stay in SLC that night. The day before you leave you would need to travel back to SLC and spend the night before your flight in SLC, so you lose at least a day and perhaps two out of your time in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.

Let us know what you are thinking.

<< What is the best way to see yellowstone without actually being in the yellowstone? >>

I wouldn't. It is a false economy both financially and making the best use of your time. Add the cost and time for the extra driving to your calculations and you'll see what I mean. Don't forget that you want to be done driving by dark, for the safety of both your party and the wildlife.

Keep checking with Xanterra for lodging inside the park, as there are often cancellations.

ENJOY!
