San Francisco to Yellowstone by Car

San Francisco to Yellowstone by Car

We're planning to drive to Yellowstone from home in San Francisco this summer. It looks too long to make in a day with a 7 year old. Has anyone found a good spot to stop for the night along the way? We'd like a good pool and decent food but more would be great. We'd consider making it a 3 day drive if there's something great to see or do along the way.

Thanks for the help.

Max, I've got to tell you that's a long stretch, and although I've ridden in a car between San Francisco and Yellowstone, I frankly don't remember much about Nevada except that it's a whole lot of hot desert and not all that much of interest unless you're into casinos. San Francisco to West Yellowstone is 943 miles or 14 hours via the freeway. The most logical stopping places would be Winnemucca, Nevada (383 miles, 5 3/4 hours) and Twin Falls, Idaho (10 hours/672 miles). There are some good restaurants in Twin Falls (The Buffalo, Maxies Pizza, La Casita) and some interesting geographical sites there as well (Perrine Bridge, Shoshone Falls). Since I'm from Twin Falls originally, I've never stayed at the hotels, but you can check TA for reviews. Have a great trip!

I second a stop in Twin Falls (since I live here!) We are getting a couple of new hotels, which should be open this summer, and there are some good restaurants, including the newly opened Canyon Crest right on the edge of the canyon!

Cdudley is right, northern Nevada is a whole lotta nothin', like most of the rest of Nevada. :)

Several years ago we did the trip but from east to west. The others are correct. There is a lot of nothing in northern Nevada. We stopped often-Salt Lake City and Reno Nevada then to San Francisco. We were coming from Atlanta, Ga. and had made our way thru Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, up to YNP and GT parks then to Salt Lake City.

Thanks all. I was afraid of that. I think we'll just roll it and stop in Twin Falls if we can stand the 10 hr drive on day 1.

MaxS, send me a message closer to time if you have any questions about the route, places to stay and things to see in Twin Falls if you decide to come this way. For you return trip, you might consider going back through Salt Lake in order to see the Salt Flats. If you stay in Salt Lake, it's worth it to see the LDS Temple grounds.
