July 2018 trip itinerary and lodging help

My husband and I and our 20 year old son are traveling to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons July 13 -23 and could use help with itinerary and lodging. We just decided to go and are flying into SLC and only were able to make Yellowstone reservations at the Mammoth Hotel July 17-19 and a Roosevelt cabin on July 20 for 1 night. There was no lodging availability other nights. We essentially have 9 nights total from July 14-23. Can someone give advice in how much time to spend at Yellowstone and GT and where else we can stay at each place? It looks like GT lodging is easier to make. We can also camp but do not know which campgrounds to use.

Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

July 13, fly into SLC at what time? You may need to stay closer to the airport.

14 Based on current reservations, I would do GTNP first. GTNP/Jackson

15 GTNP/Jackson

16 GTNP/Jackson

17 GTNP to Mammoth

18 Mammoth

19 Mammoth

20 Roosevelt

21 OF or West Yellowstone

22 OF or West Yellowstone. may need to be closer to airport this day?

23 Fly out of SLC at what time?

I often "bookend" Yellowstone with nights in the Tetons at the beginning and end of my trips. I also spend more time in the Tetons than YNP - far less driving, lots of things to see and do and just as much wildlife PLUS moose! I would probably add nights in the Tetons at the end. If you want to stay in the Yellowstone area, you could add a night in Cooke City after the Roosevelt night and then a night in West Yellowstone for the last night. Keep trying to get a room at Old Faithful. My favorite is the Old Faithful Inn. I'd have my last night in West Yellowstone or Jackson though.

Thanks for the quick advice already! We arrive on 7-13 in SLC at about 5pm. After we get our rental car we could drive a couple of hours and stay somewhere to get towards the parks on our first night or just stay in SLC. We leave at 4pm on 7-23 so I think that gives us enough time to drive back if we leave early. It might make more sense to to GT at the end for a night or 2 in order to be closer to SLC and away from traffic. Thoughts? Also where else can we stay at Yellowstone? And where to stay at GT?

" Also where else can we stay at Yellowstone? And where to stay at GT?"

Two of us have tried to answer the first question.

In GTNP -

Jackson Lake Lodge

Signal Mountain Lodge

Colter Bay cabins

(and if you have the budget - Jenny Lake Lodge)

Or in the town of Jackson.

Yes. My choice would be to end the trip in Jackson and leave from there.

Thanks so much for your advice. How many nights for YS vs. GT? We have 9 total given we arrive late on the 13th. We do not like real touristy stuff and like to hike, swim, bike, etc. And don't mind camping.... thoughts?

OK, if you want Tetons at the end, I would put OF or West Yellowstone at the beginning. In that case I would bookend, to have more time for GTNP, not just the last two nights. You currently have all lodging on the north end. I might even cut one night from Mammoth and do 3 nights on the south end. Less driving if you could find Canyon or Lake for a night in that area, otherwise 3 at OF or West Yellowstone would work as well.

July 13, fly into SLC at 5 p.m. overnight Ogden, Pocatello or Idaho Falls? Others are better at the driving time on that side of the park.

14 to GTNP ( Jackson Lake Lodge, Colter Bay Village or Signal Mountain Lodge. Or in the town of Jackson- more options, no Teton views)

15 GTNP to OF or West Yellowstone (or Canyon/Lake. I would do 2 at OF or West and one Canyon or Lake. or all three at West)

16 OF or West Yellowstone

17 Mammoth (or cut one night Mammoth for OF/West or Canyon/Lake)

18 Mammoth

19 Mammoth

20 Roosevelt

21 Roosevelt to GTNP.

22 GTNP

23 Fly out of SLC at 4 p.m.

If you are thinking of camping, you might like the tent cabins at Colter Bay for the Tetons. If you really want to tent camp, the campgrounds are FCFS there, but Gros Venture often doesn't fill. If you want to camp in YNP, you might look at Madison, Canyon, Grant or Bridge Bay, all need reservations, the campgrounds fill as well. Would you rent or bring your camping equipment?

Biking isn't great for YNP, better on the bike path in Jackson Hole.

Firehole Canyon Drive has a swimming area, if it is open during your trip. Boiling River near Mammoth is a soaking area, if it is open and be aware of the warnings. You might like part of a day from Mammoth to Chico Hot Springs for a swim/soak?
