Suggested itinerary for early Aug w/ 2 active teen boys?

Hi, We are a family of four traveling up to Yellowstone for ~3 days in early August. Two active boys, ages 12 and 15. Staying 2 nights in Canyon, and 3rd night at Old Faithful. Any suggestions whether we are best off exploring on our own, or booking tours? Do we need to make reservations? What are the must-see sights with such limited timing? Thank you!

Your time is pretty short but I would tour on your own. With 3 nights you just have 2 full days plus probably parts of the days before and after.

There is plenty of walking/hiking to keep them active.

They might be interested in the webcams from Yellowstone.

Here is a link to someone's Top 10 sights - I agree they are Top 10, just not the ranked order.

Hopefully when you are asking about reservations you are meaning activity reservations?

If you want to do an excellent educational tour with your family I would highly suggest looking at the Summer 2018 Yellowstone Forever offerings. Yellowstone Forever is a non-profit educational partner with Yellowstone Park. I have never taken a class/tour from them but have talked to people that have and have observed their wildlife tours/classes in Lamar Valley and they do a really nice job.

If you're interested in a wildlife tour in the park, specifically in Lamar Valley, there are numerous private companies that operate out of Gardiner (north entrance) that you could look into.

Again, like Yellowstone Forever, I have no personal experience with private wildlife tour companiesbut have seen many of the tour groups out with their clients in Lamar Valley when we've been watching wildlife there. The ones that I've seen that I've really been impressed with are:

Yellowstone Wild (Emil McCain)

Yellowstone Insight (Macneil Lyons)

There are others that I can't think of right now but you can find a list of private companies authorized to provide tours inside Yellowstone Park on the following link. Unfortunately, the list is not organized by entrances like the winter list is so you have to spend time going into each company's website to see where they are based out of and what type of tours they offer.

The majority of people self-tour Yellowstone Park on their own and have a fantastic time. Taking a tour so you can let someone else drive has its merits and benefits. Even though I have always self-toured the park these last 36+ years, I would love to take a tour one of these days, especially one that is an active and educational tour.
