Traveling June 10-13 Yellowstone National Park - please help

We are going to be there (Yellowstone) in early/mid June. Just the way it worked for us as a family.

1. Where should we go?

2. What should we avoid?

3. How should we dress? We aren’t staying overnight in the park.

4. Will it be crowded

5. Will there be bugs?

6. What kind of animals will we see?

7. Can we go to Mammoth Falls and Artiste Point?

8. Current plan: 3 days

Day 1: drive from Jackson Hole to Old Faithful to Island Park (home base)

Day 2: drive from island park to Mammoth Falls

Day 3: drive from island park to Artiste Pointe

9. Where should we eat while on our excursions

10. Has anyone used GyPSy App for touring Yellowstone??

Early June won't be crowded. It will be cold at night. No matter when you go, take and wear layers. The day may start at 32 degrees and warm up 30 degrees. Be ready for cold and be ready to take off layers as the day warms up.

Since the early 80s I've taken the following approach for three days in the park -

Day 1 - do one of the loops (upper or lower)

Day 2 - do the other loop

Day 3 - go back to see anything you missed or wanted to see more of

The road in YNP = the Grand Loop Rd - is a figure 8 made of those two loops. The other roads are entrances coming in from the 5 gates and intersect with the Grand Loop Rd.

I can't think of anything to "avoid" in the park.

Yes, you will see those as well as the other major sites in the park.

I answered some of your questions on your other thread.

1. Your plan listed in 8 is fine.

3. Since you are from San Diego you may find it is pretty chilly. The overnight temps may be below freezing. Bring jackets, glove liners and warm hats especially if you plan to leave early from your Island Park lodging.

4. Not as much as in July.

5. Yes. Discussed on your other thread. Also may be deer flies that bite.

6. The official YNP website is wonderful and can tell you all you want to know about the wildlife you will see in Yellowstone. Along the West entrance road in particular, since you'll be driving it a lot, are lots of bison and elk. This is one reason you should not drive this at night. They do walk down the middle of the road, particularly the single bulls as well as the nursery herd with the females and babies. You'll need to be careful of the babies if you try to go around them.

7. Explained on the other thread - Mammoth is travertine terraces, not a waterfall.

9. Take a look at the above website for dining options. It depends on where you are. There are food outlets at Mammoth, Canyon and Old Faithful.

10. Opinion on your other thread.

Pam
