GTNP - YNP June/August Itinerary planning?

Hello all,

We're planning for our family (2 kids @ 9 and 12) trip to Wyoming. Here are our 2 plans. Since it's our first visit, any comment/help is truly appreciated.

Plan 1:

--------

Flying in from SJC to JAC.

Day 1: Jackson Lake Lodge. Spend the day inside GTNP

Day 2-3: Drive to YNP. Stay @ Old Faithful inn. Visit Grant village center & West Thumb, Upper and Norris Geysers

Day 4: Mammoth Hot springs. Visit Albright visitor center & watch hot spring travertine.

Day 5: Drive southeast to Tower-rooservelt and stay @Canyon village. Will visit Hayden valley & Grand Canyon.

Day 6: Stay @Yellowstone lake lodge

Day 7: leaving JAC.

Plan 2:

--------

Fly to RAP (Rapid City) to spend 2 nights to visit Mt Rushmore. Then, fly to JAC and continue with plan 1.

Many thanks

-Phi

I would stay the last night in Jackson instead of Lake so you are closer to the airport on flight day unless you have a late flight out.

Starting in Rapid City works. There are several things in addition to Mount Rushmore to tour in the area. Rushmore itself won't take 2 days. Flight cost from there to Jackson may be high?

And the flight will not be direct. You will need to connect and the flight itself will be anywhere from 4 hours to about 7 hours depending on airline.

The reason I know this I checked for a friend who did not want to drive across WY and loose a day of their vacation.

They re worked their entire schedule anyway.

I'd go with plan 1 with just 6 nights. If you have 10 nights you could include Mt Rushmore and drive across Wyoming.

I'll just add something about your daily plan. While there is a Visitor Center at Grant Village, to me it's not particularly well done. Their focus is the Fires of 1988 which I find very interesting but they leave out SO much! One thing that REALLY bothers me is they have a static display of firefighting tools but they don't have them named and tell nothing about them. Well, OK, you don't need to label a shovel a shovel, but the fascinating thing to me is that modern day firefighters are still using the other 2 implements they have on display. They were both developed in the early 1900's and are named after the very interesting men who came up with the ideas - the Pulaski (developed by Big *Ed* Pulaski who saved most of his crew during the 1910 Big Burn across N. Idaho by holding them at gunpoint in an abandoned mine shaft) and the McLeod (developed by Malcolm McLeod).

Well, that is totally irrelevant to your plan and that's before coffee! Spend your time at West Thumb over Grant Village, but do stop at Grant if anyone needs a comfort stop. They have flush toilets at the Visitor Center and General Store whereas at West Thumb there are only vault toilets that get heavy usage from bus tours.

I agree with spending your last night in Jackson before your flight.

Pam

Thank you all for such great feedback. After checking around, we decide to stick to plan 1.

Given plan 1, which Yellowstone location do you recommend us to spend more time as we have up ton10 days for the trip? Is Mammoth or Yellowstone lake worth extra night stay?

Thank you for hotel suggestion for the final night.

With 10 days, you might like to do 1 Jackson/GTNP - 2 OF, 1 Mammoth or Roosevelt, 1 or 2 Cody, 2 Canyon and 2 GTNP. If you don't want to go out to Cody, you can add it to either YNP or GTNP.
