Salt City To Yellow Stone Park

Hi. TA Members,

We shall drive from Salt City to visit yellow Stone Park on 25.5.2018.

Which route would be more faster and/or safety because we are afraid that it might be still snowy?

Actually, we shall visit there everyday for 5 days by driving to different part of the park. Will the park be fully opened during the timing that we are there?

Is there anything for us to pay attention?

Yes, do you have lodging reservations made? Do not go to Yellowstone if you don't have them. Please tell us that you have made lodging reservations.

There's one route from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone. That's north on I 15 from Salt Lake City to Idaho Falls Idaho where you will take highway 20 to West Yellowstone and the west entrance of the park. Snow should not be an issue. These roads are very good roads and safe to travel if you use common sense and drive responsibly.

Forgot to add that it's a 5.5 hour drive from Salt Lake City to West Yellowstone. If your accommodations are inside Yellowstone Park, you can add another hour to an hour and a half to reach those accommodations. You want to leave Salt Lake City so that you arrive at your final destination well before sundown.

The lodging inside the park are all full and we can only stay in Salt City.

Then visit the park by driving from Salt Lake City everyday. We notice that it will be a 5 hour drive one way too!

I assume that you actually mean Salt LAKE City and not Salt City.

It's a terrible plan to even think about driving to Yellowstone as a day trip from SLC. Don't even think about it. it's more like a 5.5 to 6 hour drive from Salt Lake City just to the west entrance of Yellowstone. Up and back to Yellowstone from Salt Lake City in one day would be up to 13 hours in the car with stops.

You need to find lodging near Yellowstone. Spend some looking for hotels in town of West Yellowstone Montana. It's right at the entrance to Yellowstone Park.

Also, check this website, repeatedly for lodging inside Yellowstone. By repeatedly, I mean several times a day. People change their plans and you may be able to a room in the park that way. This is the official website for booking hotel rooms inside Yellowstone.

Rexburg is much better than Salt Lake City. But it’s still a 1.5 drive, one way. It seems that you don’t have an understanding of the bast size of Yellowstone. It’s huge and has 300 miles of roads. Once you get to the western entrance of Yellowstone, you still have another hour or longer just to get to Old Faithful. Because it is a very bad idea to drive inside Yellowstone and back to Rexburg in the dark, your time in the park will be reduced.

The entire region is populated with large wildlife that can and will be on the very dark roads when the sun goes down. You won’t see them in time to avoid a collision. So you must be back at your accommodation before sunset.

Have you even done any research for hotels in West Yellowstone?

Also, you probably aren’t aware that the weekend you are traveling is a major US public holiday. That is having an impact on hotel availability at Yellowstone.

West Yellowstone is better. Do not stay in Rexburg or Salt Lake city.

Do not depend on booking websites. Check TA reviews and contact hotels directly by email or phone.
