I will be visiting for 9 days and staying in yellowstone park. Where can we fish that is NOT in the park? We have a state fishing license and do not want to fish within yellowstone. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It might help if you told us where you are staying so people could suggest things outside the nearest entrances for you.

When you say you have a *state fishing license* - which state?

Considering YNP encompasses 3 states, it would be good to know which state you have a license in. With that information, we can help as Dobby suggested. The area surrounding YNP is huge and one can take hours getting from one entrance to the other. So, if you have a WY license, but are staying in Gardiner, MT or near the North entrance, you might as well spend the money for a YNP or MT license vs traveling hours to get back to the state you have a license in. Small price to pay for $25 vs. hours on the road.

I will be staying at Old faithful lodge and canyon lodge. We have Wyoming state fishing license. May you please advise where to fish outside of the park from these locations. Thank you so much.

Well, the closest fishing to OF would be out the West entrance to West Yellowstone, Montana, an hour to 1.5 hour drive. There are several fly shops in West Yellowstone where your group would be able to purchase Montana fishing licenses and get local reports on current conditions.

Here's a link to the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce website with fishing information.

The closest to Canyon would be out the North entrance to Gardiner MT. Again, there are fly shops in town that can update you on local conditions. Cooke City MT would be the next closest.

If you want to fish in Wyoming since you have a Wyoming State Fishing License you will need to go out the south entrance or the east entrance of Yellowstone Park. Both options will require a long drive.

The following Wyoming Game and Fish Department link has a downloadable fishing guide for Wyoming. Click on the link to download the guide and scroll down to page 9. There are two Wyoming fishing areas next to the park- #1 Snake River Drainage to the south of the park and #2 Wind River & Big Horn River drainage to the east of park. Page 10-11 have detailed information about the water bodies south of the park. Pages 12-16 have detailed information about the water bodies in the area just east of the park.

You don't want to drive in the dark, so plan to leave and return to lodging in daytime. Also, there is road construction on the east entrance road, so add time for possible delays.
