A day in Sitka

Hi

We will be in Sitka for a day (7.00 am to 4.30 pm) via cruise ship.

We plan to visit the following places:

1. Fortress of the Bear

2. Raptor Center

3. Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park

4. Bishop House

Can someone advise on the following:

1. Is this doable on our 1 day in Sitka by public transport or walking

2. What is the order of the visit, should we do the Fortress of the Bear first or the Sitka National Historic Park first

Would appreciate any suggestions and comments.

Thanks

Sandy

@hsmamatotwo - Blue Line bus schedule (Fortress of the Bears stop is past Whale Park, just ask the driver): http://ridesitka.com/the-ride/schedule/ . Note the bus does not run on weekends.

@Joshua - Sept. 30, though it's pretty sparse after Sept. 15: claalaska.com/wp-content/…Sitka-SIT-2017.pdf

these are local buses - anybody can buy a day pass and ride them. We look to use these in town for our upcoming trip.

I'm not OP, but here's how our day in Sitka went....(It was fantastic) what a beautiful town! We had to take a cruise ship supplied shuttle over to a big visitor center, which we didn't enter. Instead, we had a printed map,and started walking. One block up from where the buses dropped us(and where people met tours, etc, there were plenty of tour buses on offer then also) was a nice visitor center, where a nice lady directed us to continue walking..... We walked up and around the beautiful harbor area- so many eagles, it was a gorgeous day! and followed the water's edge around to the historical center ,which we didn't go into, there were some totem poles outside. We continued walking a pretty trail through the woods, and then across a road, and up a driveway hill to get to Raptor Center. It was a lovely walk(so much to take pictures of) and Raptor Center was really ,really nice,so many cool birds to see there. ($12 pp) After that, we were a bit unsure about how to get to the Fortress of the Bear,so we ended up calling a taxi (they have cards and a phone at the desk here) so for $20 we taxi'd over to the bears. ($10 pp,$5 under 18!)This place was AWESOME. We stayed for a couple of hours, just watching animals and taking pictures. (even the hummingbird feeder was amazing) After, the friendly staff directed us to the bus stop (2 minute walk) where the bus came hourly. for 2.00 pp, we rode back almost into town. We actually stopped and got off near the Raptor center again,as we wanted to grab a snack at the convenience store right there, and mail some postcards at the post office. And I wanted to walk back the way we had come,it was so pretty. Then we had to take that shuttle bus back to our ship(we were the last us) So we did that...our day took about 5-6 hours (maybe?) ,it wasn't expensive (as far as a port day goes) ad we had a wonderful time! The people in town were so friendly, and willing to assist if needed.

Hi

We're also looking to make the most of our day in port but it'll be late season, Saturday 30th September. Will anything still be open and will buses be a problem then? I'm hoping the Bears won't have hibernated by then!
