Day Trip from Washington

We are driving down from Washington to Luray Caverns and wish to cover Skyline Drive on our way back. Which would be the best route in the entire drive and any good spots for enjoy the scenic beauty.

Any suggestions would be great!!

Thanks in advance

When are you planning this trip? If it is anytime soon, you need to keep in mind the sunset times. If you arrive at SNP too late in the day, you won't see much with an early sunset.

All of Shenandoah National Park has plenty of places to enjoy the scenic beauty. I think the most logical route for you would be to enter the park at the Thornton Gap Entrance, which is a short drive (around 20 minutes) from Luray Caverns. Then head north along Skyline Drive and exit the park at Front Royal so you can take I-66 back to Washington,D.C. There are many scenic overlooks along this stretch of road where you can pull over and see the scenic beauty of the park. This stretch of road is about 35 milles long and the speed limit is 35 mph through the park. Expect the drive to take at least 1 hour without stops.

For more info, including maps of the park, see www.nps.gov/shen

Would you kindly provide us with the time of year you plan on masking your day trip?

Thank you,
