2 nights in the US - visiting Shenandoah - where to stay?

Hi everyone,

We are a retired couple from Bristol, England visiting your state for the first time.

At the end of a 3 week road tour around Chesapeake Bay area we are heading over to Shenandoah NP in the hope that we might catch some early fall colors. OK we might be lucky, we might not.

We plan to spend 2 nights in the area, having driven up from Charlottesville on Friday 7th October.

We have to return our rental car to IAD Washington DC airport by 3pm on Sunday 9th October before flying home.

Could you guys please advice where would be the best place to look for a motel for our final 2 nights - there seem to be so many choices. We are on a budget, so a max of $100 a night would be good.

I imagine that if we have Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday morning in the area before we scoot off to IAD, we will want to look at more than just fall colors from Skyline Drive?

Luray looks like a sensible base, but we'd be interested in any thoughts / suggestions.

We will have used rental apartments / houses during our tour, but would really like a hotel / motel for our last 2 nights.

thanks

Thanks Kesh_grammy - that looks like a good tip.

I see that there are some caverns near Luray which we could add into our schedule as well.

If you don't get a reply from Hillside Motel you can call them at 1 800-366-0559. It is a great little motel on the side of the road. I enjoyed my two night stay there.

I can also endorse Hillside Motel. Excellent for the budget traveler and quality customer service.

If you're in town for the weekend, I cannot recommend Triple Crown BBQ enough. Some of the best BBQ I've ever had.

We spent two nights and two days in Luray. I went for a run on the Hawksbill Greenway and toured Luray Caverns one day and went for a long kayaking trip the next. We could have spent another day, but we also felt two days was a nice getaway.

Hope you have a great time!

Thanks everyone - we are back home in the UK now and yes, we did stay at the Hillside and yes it's great and convenient.

We discovered the Brookside diner just up the road (back towards Skyline Drive) - had an excellent breakfast there and for dinner we found the Mimslyn Inn in Luray - happened to be a night with music outside under the colonnade - magical and great food.

We liked Luray very much.

Greetings Chris H,

Thank you for letting us know of your stay at the Hillside / Luray, I hope you might take a few minutes & post a report on the trip report thread of your recent visit to SNP & the area, it will help others planning a visit to our breathtakingly beautiful Shenandoah National Park.
