7-8 Nights: San Antonio and???

First and foremost, thank you for taking time read and provide your input. My husband and I are traveling to San Antonio March 26th. We have booked the Hilton Palacio del Rio on the River walk for 4 nights (March 26th-March 30th). We were going to do some day trips to the Caverns and Austin area. March 30th we were going to head down to Corpus area for 3 nights, likely staying in Port Aransas and flying out or Corpus on April 2nd. With that said, after reading posts here about how great Fredericksburg and the hillside country aren't sure if we should split between Corpus/Port Aransas or hillside or??? We are OPEN to any ideas and can fly back home from any airport. We love trying local food, beer, wine and live music (one man and a guitar is all we need). We are in our mid 30's, early 40's, no kids, and prefer adult activities/areas. We love anything near the water, especially lakes. Our goal in coming to Texas is to check out the local areas, cute surrounding towns that one day we may call home or at least find a hidden gem for future vacations.

Fredericksburg would offer you the wining and dining that you enjoy and since you’d be there mid-week, the crowds should not be horrible. You might even find live music at some of the dining venues (e.g. Hondo’s). It will be a particularly nice time of year to be there as the wildflowers should be in bloom (but the recent hard freeze may affect that). What you won’t get in F’burg and the Hill Country is “water”. So, if you want to be at a beach or lake, you best go elsewhere.

I agree 100% that splitting your time between San Antonio and the Hill Country will be the best use of your time. Here's a website with a listing of the wineries in that area: https://www.wineroad290.com/ During the week will definitely be less crowded, although make sure NOT to visit on a Monday when many of the wineries and restaurants are closed. The Garrison Brothers distillery is also fun to visit, especially if you bring a picnic lunch: https://www.garrisonbros.com/

Another fun and unique attraction is the Bat Cave at Old Tunnel State Natural Area: https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/old-tunnel/bat-viewing Your visit will probably be too early to see them, but if you return in the summer, it's really a neat experience!

Personally, I would skip the beach in March. The water is going to be too cold to be in the water, and the beaches are nothing like you'll find in Florida or the Caribbean.

Others have already provided details, but I'm going to just let you know that I completely agree with what has been said - Fredericksburg and the hill country suits what you want to see and do.

Thank you so much for this information. I greatly appreciate your insight and think we are going to do a "U-turn" with our plans and head to the Hill Country.

Good decision. This is what we did in January, San Antonio, then Hill Country. We loved it and plan on returning to Hill Country in late March.

Gruene is a charming little town you might want to see. Eat at the Grist Mill and catch some live music at Gruene Hall. It's pronounced Green even though it looks nothing like that! There are also some cute bed and breakfasts there and little shops, antiques, etc.

I am biased so I won't try to convince you otherwise but, and maybe it is because I have plenty of relatives in Fred'burg and the Hill Country, I find the area tourist central. It may also be because I remember when it was authentic. I recall when Gruene Hall was in the middle of nowhere. Nine out of ten people you will meet will not be locals and everything is priced as if you were in a theme park.

The good is the National Museum of the Pacific War is unbelievable and I have been to war museums all over the world. The drive is really nice and the scenery is fantastic. Luckenbach is still there, but yes touristy. Just be prepared, even mid-week, to pay premium prices for accommodations, food, and entertainment.

I'll be laying out at the beach and enjoying some fresh Gulf seafood!

https://www.oasis-austin.com/ is a fun place to grab a drink in Austin. They have great sunset views of the lake, and sometimes they have live music as well.

Definitely for March Hill Country instead of the gulf coast.

Google hill country wineries, there a bunch and some might have live music on the weekends.

The area also has some good breweries and beer gardens etc.

If weather is super warm you can always drive to the lakes and kayak etc...

If the wildflowers are in bloom )I think you’ll be a little early this year) Lady Bird wildflower center would be nice.

There is so much to do in the area from San Antonio to Austin!!

Lots of outdoor activities and hiking etc

Enjoy!!!
