I am bringing my mil to San Antonio for our first visit. We would love to find some great Mexican food that is inexpensive but authentic. Besides the river walk and the missions what else would be a highlight in the area? We do have a car and are willing to travel around 2-3 hours. Love nature and historical sites. Shopping is not a priority unless it is something unique and special. Thanks for any input.

Where are you coming from, i.e. what is your expectation of "authentic" Mexican? TexMex is definitely a thing, and can be significantly different from true Mexican cuisine, which also has regional differences. I defer to the locals on which restaurants do each best, but I've learned that those not from the southwest have a different view of what is "authentic."

The Mercado is unique if you've not done a Mexican market before. Look for vanilla. It's way better than the stuff you can get at the grocery store.

If you enjoy nature and being outside, I'd recommend the Japanese Tea Gardens - very pretty, and even better it's absolutely free. Lots of steps up and down, beautiful views, a small waterfall, ponds, nice plants. You might enjoy the Botanical Gardens too, although we thought it was a little expensive at $15 per person. It's huge, so I'd recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes if you go. If you enjoy history, The Saga is a neat combination of art and history, and it's free to the public as well. We did a Segway tour on one of our trips and enjoyed that too.

We Are driving in from Missouri. I probably should have said good food not authentic. When we were in Mexico we loved the food and was hoping to have some thinking close to Mexico there would be. We tend to go for great taste over atmosphere and can drive to whatever neighborhood needed. Would love recommendation for any good food although not extremely expensive or fancy. Thanks for replying.

History--I will assume you are including The Alamo in your comment about the missions. Also, the King William Historic District, the San Fernando Cathedral, the Spanish Governor's Palace.

There are several sites associated with LBJ just west of Austin--especially the LBJ State and National Historical Parks at LBJ Ranch, if open--but with just a weekend you may not have the time or interest to go there.

We just stayed in San Antonio for a month. I can't speak to any good Mexican restaurants, we didn't find any that were terrific, but I strongly recommend eating at Tony G's Soul food restaurant. They have a Sunday Brunch that offers a variety of food plus music. It was our first time hearing live music since the pandemic. If you don't go for the brunch go any other time. The fried chicken is delicious and incredibly moist. My husband had the meatloaf that he said was great too. If you are latte lovers I recommend you find a little place called the Niche. They have the best latte I have EVER had. They use 4 shots of expresso so the drink doesn't taste like warm milk. They also sell a few pastries that they get from some place that makes them from a certified kitchen. I tried a pop tart today. It was very good. Can't recommend either of these places highly enough. You should also go to the Japanese Garden. It is beautiful and free. We were not super impressed by the River Walk. Food is over priced and mediocre.

I wasn't super impressed with the Alamo. I expected a lot more information on the Alamo than what they had. We didn't do the audio tour, that might have made the Alamo better. I thought if you seen any of the missions the Alamo looked pretty much the same.

Most restaurants on the riverwalk are more for the ambiance than the food. Boudro's has good reviews. I've had good food there, but I don't necessarily care for how crowded it could get (pre-pandemic.) Their sister restaurant, Zinc, just off the riverwalk, has excellent food, though not Mexican per se, and is more intimate.

Hopefully some locals will chime in with their favorite non-tourist hole in the wall restaurants.
