We will be in Custer state park either Monday or Tuesday next week depending on the weather. Is the buffalo jeep tour worth it? We were planning on just doing the scenic drives ourselves but this looks interesting.
A couple of my siblings did the Jeep tour and said they had an excellent time. So based on their experience, when we last went to the BH, we also booked the Jeep tour. (On all our previous visits, we had driven the Wildlife Loop and enjoyed seeing bison that way.)
But...we did not have a good experience with the Jeep tour. It was a day after it had rained and the driver said he was not allowed to go off-road looking for bison because it would destroy the turf (park restrictions). So we could only drive the paved and gravel roads and we saw no bison that we couldn’t have easily seen just driving the Wildlife Loop in our own. FWIW, it is a fairly expensive tour and they don’t make any guarantees about wildlife viewing.
Just stop at the visitor center and ask where the buffalo etc. are hanging out and then drive yourself. Same info that the tours get.
Yeah, I would skip the Jeep tour as well. The bison are almost always off the main wildlife loop road, and the visitor center typically has info on where to find them.
