live music clubs and teenagers

Traveling to New Orleans in late June with family that includes a 15 year old and 12 year old. Both are musically inclined and are very interested in seeing some live music; especially Jazz and Brass bands. I know Preservation Hall admits kids any ideas on other places to try?

Here's a recent TA report that may help you.

Two outdoor cafes, Cafe Beignet at Legends Park across from the Royal Sonesta on Bourbon and Gazebo Cafe at the beginning of the French Market just in front of the Margaritaville store offer jazz and blues and children are welcome. They usually start the music around noon. Another option is Sunday brunch at Buffa's on Esplanade/Burgundy (use the door on Burgundy) 11:00-2:00, inexpensive, local place with a great little jazz band.

The link is the same one Irish posted above. Good luck.

Not to be too stodgy here, but be aware of the huge amount of graphic porn on Bourbon...I would have been really upset if I was with my (grand) children. People were handing out graphic brochures and strippers were flashing in doorways. You have to see Bourbon (then move on to Royal ! ) but be aware of what the kids are going to see.

Most of that takes place on the blocks closest to Canal St. imo. But yes, kids are going to see some graphic t-shirts and some adult behavior almost anywhere in the French Quarter. The kids might have some stories to tell their friends when they get home but I don't think they'll be scarred for life. :)

Fritzel's is also a good option because they have music during the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays.

I would take the children on the obligatory Bourbon run in daylight hours. Nighttime on Bourbon is for the next generation. Yes, there are some pornographic pictures in the windows and stuff, but I don't think it is too shocking. My children were never jolted by that stuff having been exposed to a great deal of FQ life at a very young age. As a matter of fact, Bourbon really has no cache to any of them at their post college and college ages. Of course, they do have to take all of the visiting friends down there to experience it.

Of course, we may be a little jaded. How many kids do you know aren't surprised by seeing a man in a tutu and a thong?
